The lowest price isn't always the best choice

Ever notice that the lowest price is not always the best deal? This afternoon I needed gas, and I had seen a place this morning that was reasonably priced so I figured I'd stop there on the way home.

On the way to place I was intending to go, I saw another station for a couple of cents less so I changed lanes and made my way into this station. It wasn't busy. The first pump had a bag over the nozzle. The next pump said that it wouldn't accept credit cards. Went to another island. That pump said "no gas" - as did the others I could see. No wonder it wasn't busy.

That trip to save a couple of cents a gallon actually cost me in wasted time - what appears to be a good deal may not be.

Well I got my gas at they place I originally intended to stop. On the way home from there, I saw a couple of more stations with gas a few pennies less per gallon than I had paid. Interestingly there were no cars. It was hard to tell from driving by if they were open - perhaps not.

The lowest price isn't always the best choice.

I agree that the lowest price isn't the best option. In roofing sales, I sometimes tell folks only the truly rich can afford to do it twice!

I hate it when that happens!

Just like the discount brokerages. The lowest price is not always the best choice.

Hi Steve

The best price is a fair price for something we want, but the real test is value.

Good luck and success

Steve...

Once ... I drove way too long on a tank of gas to get to my favorite station ... and the minute I got there, the power went off! I barely made it to the next station.

Steve,

Price has to be a factor in decisions, but going by cheap price along -- as you stated -- is a bad life choice.

I'm always surprised at some of the places with slightly higher gas and are still busy.  I always figure they must have amazing customer service.

Steve I use to work with an agent who would drive all over town trying to get the best price. I tried to explain to him that he spent well over a gallon trying to save 2 cents a gallon...

Hi Steve:

I'm still a firm believer in, you get what you pay for!

Steve - This is so true.  I remember a place that had gas at a lower price...The pump was so slow, it took over 10 minutes to fill the tank (of a small car).   :)

Steve, with gas or anything else convenience and patronage are other factors, I pay a little more for gas an a station owned by someone who has purchased property from me.

David,

That's a great on-liner. Price is only part of the equation. :)

Ellie,

Agreed. Low price gets our attention but then there needs to be something more. :)

Richard,

Or get to your favorite station and discover that the pumps are empty or not working. :)

Steven,

Value does indeed need to part of the equation as well. :)

Justin,

Soemtimes I think it's just brand loyalty. There doesn't seem to be any other explanation. :)

Paul,

Yes, but it's the adventure, the journey, the conquest! :)

Toula,

As long as you don't overpay for something that you can get just as well for less. :)

Debi,

There are places also that have so many people that it takes several times longer for the pumps to deliver the fuel to everyone. :)

Steve,

That makes perfect sense, and you should continue to do that. :)
