The recent elections were great for ad people and marketers. I’m sure they were working overtime. Ads were seemingly being cranked out in just a matter of hours.
Some were fairly memorable and even pleasant to watch. Some made us cringe.
That got me thinking about good ads and bad ads – of course by my standards.
The Super Bowl – except for this past year – is usually a great display of creativity. My favorite commercial this past year – and one of only a couple that I consider to worthy or rewatching – is the story of Hank the Clydesdale and his Rockyesque training regimen that he is put through by his friend the dalmation.
Anyone else turned off by the Geico commercials? I would never buy their product. Their incessant, wacky commercials are enough for me to feel this way but I’ve had experience also. What’s next the Geico channel? I mean they tried the caveman TV show.
Any commercials really bother you to the point that they have wasted their money trying to appeal to you?

Thats funny, I kinda like the Geico commercials...but ones that get me are the shampoo commercials with all that moaning. I mean really?
I've had it up to here w/the political commercials. They've played them so much, I can recite many of them word-for-word.
I like the Geico commercials, too. Of course, I'm a Geico customer...
I would have to say the political ads drove me nuts! Even the ones for the candidates I endorsed! Seeing them over, and over, and over again really got to me!!
The Geico ads are very silly but I happen to like the caveman one where he is on the airport moving strip and sees the Geico ad. But other then that.. the geico is a silly idea.

Hmm they don`t gave a lot of commercials on C NN ;-)
Ashley,
The idea of a talking animal (Tony the Tiger) is fine. One of my issues is the consistency of the campaigns. You have an inept anthropologist, cavemen out of their element, actors who need a new agent along with a talking pancake syrup, and the spokes-lizard. How can you brand with that - except to dismiss the whole thing? :)
Steve
Lanette,
I remember very few political commercials and don't know the words to any - except "change" and "I approved this message." :)
Steve
Nicole,
I'd have to agree that of all the Geico ads that one is well-done. :)
Steve
Liz,
That's maybe a good reason to keep watching it. :)
Steve
Being from Texas, we did not get the wrath of overtime political commercials for President as many states did. They counted Texas for McCain and put their money in the swing states. The Geico ads with the cavemen should be voted out. The lizzard does have his moments but I'm getting tired of all as well. One reason to not watch TV.
Steve most of my fav's are from when I was a kid - my all-time favorite is "Mikey will eat it"
Connie,
Thank you. All valid points. There are so few really good commercials. :)
Steve
Darla,
Interesting how many commercials aimed at kids are for cereals (and sugar). :)
Steve
Steve.. Those Geico Commericals have grated on me since the first one I saw. But the advertising worked.. we're talking about it. Not that I would ever get it... but if we are mentioning it others might be too. So, there could be someone who will get it.. NOT US.
Steve, in our market, Comcast commercials get a little old, particularly the one with the game show format. The only issue I have with it is they should change the city and question format.
Good points. Most companies do not do a good job of vetting out the impact of their advertising. Like they sitt around in a conference room and say out of sheer frustration and time constraints, sure that is a great idea. When in fact they hate it. Go figure!
Bo
Bo,
Haven't seen the Comcast commercials. I agree with your review of the sitting around the table concept. :)
Steve
Valerie,
Thank you. Thank you. Actually we don't know if they worked. We just know that they keep producing them. :)
Steve
I hate the pharmaceutical commercials. What I love to hate are those wacky local commercials! In St. Louis, we have had Becky Queen of Carpet, some barking dog for a used car lot, Schwengel, Mizerannii Brothers, Frederick Roofing, etc. I can't get the jingles, tag lines, bad images, funny voices, etc. out of my head. I can't say that they were compelling enough to make me buy from them - but they were memorable.
Steve - I agree with Darla. I really liked the Life cereal commercial with Mikey. :)
Steve...
On the good side, I LOVE the Coors Lite commercials with the former NFL coaches! They are a scream!
Ryan,
I'm with you on those. Everything is a disease today with a 3 or 4 letter acronym. You're right about those local ads. There was a car dealer who had a jingle 20 years ago that I still remember. :)
Steve
Debi,
Did you see the one with the grown-up Mikey doing as resprise of this commercial? :)
Steve
Richard W.,
I don't share your fondness for them. I scream when they come on - at them. :)
Steve
Oh boy, if I start now then I have to comment on your whole three part series! Or will there be four or more parts?? Guess I am hooked now :)
I LOVE the baby Clydesdale commercial - that is my FAVORITE commercial EVER!!! Next favorite was that cute little golden retriever boy puppy who went to summer camp and got the 'itchies' - I think it was a Westminster Dog Show commercial - wish I had a copy of that one!
Lisa,
You have good taste in commercials, and I appreciate you commitment to comment on all three. There are no plans for anymore right now. :)
Steve
Steve - No, I haven't seen it. I guess I missed it. It would've been fun to see... :)
Debi,
It was on a few years back. Maybe there's a YouTube of it. :)
Steve
I hate the one with the bikini-clad girls flying up a guy's nose. I think it's for shaving cream or something. It's just gross!!
Jayne,
You've got me on that one - haven't seen it but doesn't sound good. :)
