Don't make your blog into a glob

Blog, glob, blob - they sound similar, but that's the only similarity we should be talking about.

This post is not directed to anyone in particular, but I love brevity and an easily understood message in blog posts. In fact, if it's more than a couple of dozen lines long, I may not even read it. You might have great content, but I am looking for a quick read. Based on comments I've received form posts about this topic, and from what I've read on other posts, I'd say there are many others who agree with me.

Blogs are for posting content - preferably just the highlights. They're for humor. They're for elucidations. They're for opinions.

Speaking of opinions, mine is that blogs are not the place for information dumping, for repetition of major news stories, or for rambling.

Am I suggesting remedies - no. Just that if you want me to read your post - unless it's got a killer title or compelling content, it needs to be succinct.

Articles, white papers, and other literary opportunities will accommodate more content for the times we're feeling particularly expressive.

Steve....  I read your blogs regularly and always enjoy them.   Your assessment of "glob, glob, glob" is right.   Say what ya gotta say....and get out.    I'll try to keep this in mind in my ramblings.    Thanks.

I'll try to keep my ramblings to a minimum :) Have a great weekend.

David,

Thank you for your support. Like I said, this wasn't directed at anyone, just a little focus - that's all.

Glob, glob, glob.  Wouldn't want to be posting glob.  Help me as I continue to try to figure this blogging thing out.  We're posting humor, education, opinions, but aren't we also posting for the public who is going to stumble upon us?

I find it very hard to get people to read my blogs being that a lot of them are for up-coming events and courses we have here at the Realtors Association (RAPB).  Do you think my content is part of the glob? :(  How can I as a Association blogger get more views?

Janna,

Great question. Of course we are posting for the public, and we are posting for other members of AR. That doesn't mean that this should look like the MLS. Blogging helps us become human to whoever reads our posts.

RAPB,

Another great question. In order to get comments, there has to be something to comment on. Posting just information may not get much of a response. "There's a meeting tomorrow." What's to say other than "OK"? Put something unusual or unknown in it - discuss benefits of the course or the designation, discuss the opportunity to learn from a great instructor, mention how far some people are traveling to attend the course, discuss the novelty (first time a course of this nature has ever been offered), or make it seem humorous ("here we go again with another course"). :)

I agree.  I like short blogs, short paragraphs, and fun or informative content.

Hi Steve

I would have to agree with you a nice short blog that's easy to read, with a clear message seem to work the best.

Good luck and success

Jen,

Thanks for your support and agreement. I'll do my part to keep posts short. :)

Lou,

Thanks. In a blog post, the message needs to be clear and brief. In an article the text can be longer. :)

Hey Steve - the funny thing is -even though for the most part I agree with you - although some of the best blogs I've ever read have been long - and I've benefited from taking the time to read them!  But there are times when I just want a quick read - for me it usually comes down to who the writer is!  And...I know that I have the tendency to have long posts.........hopefully I break it up with illustrations andphotos........but I appreciate yor comments!

Brad,

I really appreciate the visit. Thanks for your comments. Humor is the spice of a post - even if it's subtle or satire. :)

Liz,

No question there are exceptions to the brevity "rule" and the post you did on the tunnels with the great photos was quite well done. :)

Steve - As much as I'd like to read long posts, I just don't have the time.  I, too, look for short posts...  :)

Debi,

Sometimes I like long posts - if they hold my interest. Often I just skim them. Short posts I read. Thanks. :)
