Energy independence is a step closer

Did you hear the news? Maybe not with the bailout discussions going on.

Yesterday, the House actually allowed off-shore drilling to become a reality along the east and west coasts. It needs Senate approval as well. but that is expected to happen.

The House didn't exactly vote for it - what they did was not vote against it.

Each year the ban, which has been in place for some 25 years, must be renewed. This year they didn't renew the ban, so they actually authorized it.

It may be a while before we see any results from this, but it's a start.

I feel it is too. I just don't them to delay looking into alternative energy sources. You know, using this as anything more than a temp fix.

Toni,

I'm sure that alternative energy sources will be explored and developed, but this is a huge story that was virtually non-reported.

Terri,

I think this is a very important first step. Let's see where we go from here.

This is great news.  It will take a few years, but I think it will help with the prices of gas and fuel.

Carol,

We've heard about vast supplies so we'll see if that's true and just how long it takes to get them out of the ground.

Steve:  Can't see that this will save anyone money, but it is a step toward energy independence.  Exploring for, and initial set up fees for oil drilling are costly, and will be passed right down to us.  But we are getting what we asked for.

Bo,

If only it were that simply, but this is a great start.

Chris Ann,

The way it can save people money is by increasing supply of natural gas and oil (from which we get gas). As I understand it, the fees, etc. are part of what the oil companies are already spending for R&D and exploration.

Hi Steve

Well it looks like the voted to maybe drill for oil. We can now look for oil were we don't if there's any and not drill were we know it existes.

Good luck and success

Lou,

The nice thing about this change is that now companies can drill if they want to, and who knows, maybe some new players will get in the game - competition. :)

I agree, no 'no' is a tentative yes.  Hallelujah, its about time!

Posted by Lisa Friedman Central New Jersey Real Estate (Alliance Realtors) over 3 years ago

Lisa,

Absolutely, it's way past time. Next we'll have to get past the issue of where to do the drilling. :)

I also think we should be putting a lot more resources into nuclear energy.  I know a lot of people are scared of it, but if the right safety precautions are built in, all should be fine.  It would create tons of jobs and really give us some energy independence.

Lisa,

I know that many people agree with you on this - except the ones who count I guess. :)
