Cell phones. What did we ever do without them? I can remember that far back, but I'd prefer not to.
Can't live without them. Sometimes, we can't live with them either.
This afternoon on my way to a 3-hour meeting, my battery died in the middle of a call. This was unexpected - I guess I had talked more than I thought - so I had no spare battery or charger.
This begs the question, when is a cell phone not a cell phone? Answer: when it doesn't do what it's supposed to.
There are at least 3 times this happens:
(1) the battery dies - oh no!
(2) we forget it and walk off without it - panic attack!
(3) it breaks - unthinkable!

I find it funny in old movies where the good guy is running around trying to find a pay phone.
Steve,
When it takes a "swim" in your cup of water....
Ann
Mel,
I know what you mean. That's one of the reasons I got my first cell phone way back when.
Steve
Ann,
Ouch, that would definitely ruin my day. Put that under #3 (when it breaks).
Steve
I know the feeling. I feel your pain
Add one more, we drop it in the toilet!
Greg,
And which pain is that? All of the above or just a certain one? Thanks. :)
Steve
Michael,
A drop in the toilet might need it's own category - similar to dropping it down the sewer.
Steve
I dropped two in the toilet over the past ten years.
If my phone battery dies, I start foaming at the mouth and then have to do my mantra - Breathe in, Breathe out, breathe in . . . .
....or all the above Steve....lol. Good post,
Bo
Mel,
I don't know what to say. I guess the insurance definitely wouldn't cover that. Wow.
Steve
Audrey,
I'm with you. My Blackberry gets somewhere between 2-2½ hours talk time and that's it. Once it reaches low battery even plugging in won't let me make a call.
Steve
Bo,
For something as essential to daily business life as a cell phone, seems like they should make them even more disposable or even more indestructable.
Steve
Steve,
Great post!! What a way to start the day, reading on how phones are dropped in toilets. Note to self put the phone in my pocket before I make a run to the bathroom and please for all of you don't talk to someone while in the bathroom. LOL
Charlie.
Right you are about securing that phone and I usually try to lock the keyboard so I don't accidentally call anyone.
Steve
Steve - Cell phones are so much more than cell phones nowadays. They open lockboxes, have GPS and internet capabilities... Mine doesn't do all that, but some do! :)
I can remember when I got into the real estate business 26 years ago, we didn't have cell phones. In fact it was rare to even see an agent with a pager. I had kids at home, and it was as if they would wait for me to leave the house on appointments. They'd then leave without my knowing where they were.
While on a doctor visit, a light bulb went off when I saw his pager go off. "Can anyone have a pager," I asked? His response that anyone could acquire one, had me at the pager store within hours. After that, nearly half of Sacramento lit up with Realtors carrying pagers.
I look back, and I know how we did business without fax machines, cell phones, and the techology we have today. But I would never wish to go back.
Debi,
This is true. They can provide GPS, internet, email, PDA, and so much more - when they work. It's when they're lost, broken, or out of gas that they cease to be of any use to use. :)
Steve
Myrl,
Thanks for sharing that bit of history. I remember getting my first cell pone in 1988. I never went with a pager.
Steve
Steve,
Actually, after I took the battery out and dried the phone with my dryer on low, the phone continued to work like a champ. It was an LG....Life's Good!
Ann
Ann,
Wow, a wash-n-wear phone or one to go with your underwater camera when you snorkel. :)
Steve
Steve,
Yes, it would be a good addition to the diving gear....LOL
Ann
Ann,
I thought so. There you have it - another marketing opportunity. :)
Steve
Steve,
I should use it! I could start a company...
Ann
Ann,
Why not? It could really makes waves (sorry). :)
Steve
Steve,
You have a great sense of humor......LOL
