Last week I had a post about the declining gas prices, and this morning I received comment on that post from Karl Peidl in New Jersey. He stated that gas prices had fallen to $3.17 in his area and was speculating about the possibility of gas going below $3.00. From what I hear, that is a distinct possibility. In our area we have a long way to go before that happens, however.
Some time ago, someone lead me to the gasbuddy.com site, and I include a map of their county-by-county pricing across the US on my Home Sales Insights blog. I've been watching the top category drop to near $4.00 a gallon, so I checked it after Karl's comment this morning. Sure enough, for the first time in many weeks, the top category (which mostly just is noticeable in California and the Northwest) is "$3,99 and above." $4.00 is no longer being shown!

$3.17!? Where the heck is this? In Orlando, we are right around $3.60 today. I can't imagine such a difference.
Steve - That is great news indeed! The lowest price around here is $3.26. It is continuing to drop sllloooowwwlllyyy... :)
I'm very skeptical of why gas prices go up or down...I have a feeling as we set the stage for the election...the current administration will pull some strings and- gas prices will go down, Iraq will get quiet, we'll see another stimulus package from the President, and we'll discover and thwart a terrorist attack. I'm not a Democrat...
But of course I'm a conspiracy theorist...at any rate I'm gassing up!
I am glad I didn't put gas in my car at home (Lutherville, MD) this morning where it is $3.56 because in Glen Burnie, where my office is it is $3.42 a gallon. It has dropped a good 50 cents over the last 2 months. Yippee!!! Now, will the price of consumables drop too?
Randall,
I know, and your gas is even lower than ours. I did notice a station in the Kissimmee area at $3.41 on Saturday on the gasbuddy map.
Steve
I just filled up and it was $3.49! Hoorah! Finally I don't have to take out a loan to fill the tank!!
Debi,
That's really different because a couple of years ago I seem to remember the gas being higher in St. Loius and Illinois than down her when we drove that way. Now you're quite a bit lower. :)
Steve
Lynn,
Go for it. Fill up and have a really great Labor Day weekend. And look forward to even lower prices next week (if all goes well).
Steve
Tim,
You give the administration way too much credit. As long as gasoline futures are traded as a commodity we will have this volatility. However, as investors come to understand that many of their fears never materialize, we will see more stability.
Steve
June,
That's one I really don't understand. The utility companies tack on a fuel surcharge, as do the delivery companies, and the airlines. Food prices increase because of delivery costs. But they don't come back down. Why is that?!
Steve
We just filled up at Costco here in Vancouver, Washingrton and the price for unleaded was $3.65 a gallon. We must have more taxes on our gas here.
Betina,
That is good news. You're on the right side of $3.50. I hope it continues to go down.
Steve
Patty and Scott,
Our taxes are high also, and that's about the same as it is here. I saw $3.67-3.69 on Saturday. There are a few stations that are still charging way above that.
Steve
What is Grop?
Tim,
Why don't you know? "Grop" is "drop" when I'm typing too fast and forget to spellcheck before posting. Thanks for the catch.
Steve
Steve - I filled up my car this morning. It was $3.85 a gallon for middle grade gas. That's better than the $4.45 a gallon a few weeks back. But certainly a long way from the prices of a couple years ago!
Thanks for the site - i drove by my local station and was delighted to see 3.45 for the low grade -
Regina from Delaware
Myrl,
At least you're experiencing some relief. Be thankful for that. I hope it continues to get better for you.
Steve
Regina,
You're welcome. Wow, $3.45 - that's a good price compared to $3.67. Let's watch go down even more.
Steve
Steve
I was teaching a GRI class in Lake County today and on my way back to Boca Raton I get gas in Orlando and paid Three dollars and fifty one cents for regular
Good luck and success
Lou Ludwig
Lou,
That's a great price compared to what it is here. Did you bring back enough to share? :)
Steve
Hey Steve,
Thanks for the mention and link in your blog. I'd like to report that I saw another 0.02 drop today down to $3.15. I'm seeing these prices in South Jersey, about 15 minutes outside of Philly if anyone wants to come visit. The Jersey shore is beautiful this time of year (if you don't mind the medical waste washing up on the beach).
Karl,
You're welcome. That's a pretty good plug for your area. You may get some takers. You are a full $.50 below us.
Steve
And we hardly ever get hit by a hurricane...
Karl,
That's true, but don't you that little frozen white stuff in the winter, and does your temperature always stay above 30? :)
Steve
We were very lucky this past winter. It was a dry and mild year. Every storm that came through somehow skirted right around us. I never even touched my snow shovel... Of coursed I just doomed myself and will probably get multiple blizzards this years.
Karl,
That's funny because I never touched my snow shovel last winter either. :) Hope you have another mild winter although a very cold winter will help our tourism.
Steve
to get back on the topic of gas prices, they have taken a turn back upward around here. The cheapest I saw this morning was $3.19. Interestingly, the station that was elling at $3.13 a few days ago is now up to $3.29. So much for my hopes of seeing $3.00 or less. Any chances you guys in Florida can push these new storms away from the Gulf? A disruption to oil production down there isn't going to help any of us.
Karl,
See, that's what you get for bragging? :) I have no idea how storms and other factors seem to affect the speculators - but it apparently does. They seem to react first and then realize they didn't need to. At least with Fay, nobody flinched.
Steve
It just amazes me how gas prices can increases so quickly over something that may or may not even affect the industry, but then it takes so long for them to come back down. And isn't it interesting how prices went up just in time for the big Labor Day weekend?
Karl,
I think that Labor Day bump is planned. You're right. Prices can increase more than 10 cents in a single day but only decrease in amounts of 2 or 3 cents. Enjoy your weekend.
Steve
Lets all keep our fingers crossed!!!
Matt,
We can certainly do that. Things are coming back down to pre-Ike levels. Don't know where we go from here.
Steve
Oh the difference a couple of months can make. Today was $2.67 at the local BJs
Shannon,
Now that's starting to make a difference, isn't it? Something we can notice. :)
Steve
Finally! Roseville California is now seeing gas below $2.60 a gal! I love gasbuddy, such great resources we have.
Cynthia,
That's great for California. That's even good for here in our area where prices range from $2.52-2.69. :)
Steve
WoW - I was able to fill up at the pumps today at $1.51 per gallon. I feel like I just got a raise...Carla
Steve - I notice on August 25th I stated that I filled up my car with middle grade gas at $3.85 a gallon. This morning, I filled up once again, at the same station, same middle grade gas at $1.67. That's less than half!

Carla,
You should feel great. May they continue to drop. :)
Steve
Myrl,
Isn't that amazing? In a little over 3 months time to drop that much. :)
Steve
In Rhode Island our gas prices are on the rise again, Last week $1.87 today $2.04 I do go over the stateline into Ma and it is $1.93 today (only 10 minutes away and in the direction I frequently travel)
Kathleen,
Our prices rose all over town by $.10 overnight and then crept up a little more. Now, it the past couple of days they have fallen a couple of cents. :)
Steve
I cannot believe but we are at $2.47 this week of June 7th, each week it keeps getting a few cents higher. Some areas in the state are already at $2.58
Kathleen,
This is a perennial game we all play. One part of the solution is a national gasoline of one blend. :)
