The bird-of-paradise is used in song, toasts, blessings, and spells to visit upon people and deliver what the incantator requests. This being my 200th post, I would request blessings.
While it is an actual bird, it also is a gorgeous, most unusual flower that blooms this time of year.
There are several varieties, and here are 2 from my yard:

Steve,
This must be MY lucky day! First to comment. What beautiful photos.

Mike,
Why not have this be your lucky day? Maybe the bird of paradise had something to do with it. Thanks for liking the photos.

Dan,
Thanks for your comments about the flowers. Yes, we enjoy a lot of beautiful tropical plants and flowers (and fruit) - some of the names of the various plants are still unknown to us.
Steve
Anne,
Aren't they amazing flowers? And to think that they start from a little bud and turn into that incredible looking shape!
Steve
Kathy,
Thanks. Pretty picture you posted as well. These really are incredible flowers.

Steve, NICE! I do not think I have ever seen the second one before. I just do not have the time for a garden... too much else going on in my life!
Robert,
Looks like you made it back from Scout Camp in one piece. You'll have to post about it. I don't recall seeing or paying any attention to the second one before this year. Either it never flowered before or something else was blocking it.
Steve

Debi,
Thanks for your support. I appreciate reading your comments as well as your posts. Interestingly, as I just made the switch from IE to firefox, the photos have crisper on firefox. I'm impressed.

Congrat's on the 200th posting. Great job! The flowers are marvelous. When you thin them out in your garden I'd love to transplant them into mine!
See you at the Southeast Builder's Confrence on July 30th. You have done another tremendous job of putting together your "Meet the Experts" sessions. You are providing a wonderful opportunity to meet new people and learn new ideas.
I am finally paying attention to my AR membership. Have started blogging. There is much work to be done!

Deborah,
Thanks for your support and for the congrats. Look forward to your participation in 2 weeks at the SEBC in Orlando on our "Meet the Experts" panel.

These grow very well where I live. One of my sadder days occured when our office's new landscaper decided to trim all of ours back- basically he cut off all the flowers. oops.
Chuck,
I'm real sorry to hear that. There are several plants that grow in Arizona as well as Florida (when I was there in the Spring, the bottlebrush was in bloom) - it must be the heat because it's definitely not the numidity.
