Congress Will Do Anything Except What's Right

Now Dems in the Senate want to take away tax breaks for big oil that would account for about $2 billion. First, if tax breaks are necessary, taxes are too high and regulation is too steep. Otherwise, there wouldn't need to be incentives - for oil, manufacturing, small business, or any other job-creating enterprise.

Second, Congress isn't actually spending this money on oil production - which wouldn't be such a bad idea at this stage of the game. They just aren't getting it to spend at all.

Third, they want to eliminate deductions that are intended to boost production - seem like that's exactly what we need - as long as Congress takes the next step and makes drilling possible so the production can increase.

Fourth, they want to apply the $2 billion toward the national debt. That couln't hurt but wouldn't make much of a dent in the $14 trillion debt. Any bets it would never see it's way to the Treasury?

Congress wants everyone else to stop gertting tax breaks - the rich and big business. They want AMericans to get used to $4 or $5 gas claiming they can't do anything about it. They want everyone else to suffer at their hands, but the bottom line is real simple. Stop spending.

Reduce and limit the legislative staff for starters and make the legislators actually answer their own phones and research the bills they vote on. Close the Congressional gym. They can get a gym membership the same as anyone else. Limit Congressional travel to only those trips that directly are in line with their committee assignments, and then only a couple of people get to make each trip.

Note to Congress: you are servants not aristocrats. You haven't arrived, but you might be departing.

Hello Steve:

If only it were so easy to get "them" to do it. I am of a mind that anybody who has ever held an elected office of any kind, should be forbidden from being a congressman, senator, or president.  This includes any incumbents.

Steve, looks like it is going to take a few more cycles of "house cleaning" to get their attention.  Politicians are still counting on us all going back to sleep!  I don't see that happening.  Do you?

Georgia,

Congress needs a clean house, but so does that White one. :)

Hey Steve , I am all for letting Congressman and Senators serve only one term and only be in Washington DC when congress is in session. Plus only allow them a staff of 6 with the same type of terms of service. In this way they will not have time to live off of the sweat of the American tax payer.

Bill,

I was thinking more like a staff of 2 or 3. :)
