One hundred-fifty years ago today, the Confederate troops of the South fired upon the Union troops at Ft. Sumter, South Carolina, and the War Between the States - the "Civil War" - began.
Interestingly, in the Ken Burns documentary on the Civil War, the observation is made that before the War we referred to ourselves in the plural - "the United States are" - and afterward in the singular - "the United States is." It is maintained by that person in the film that a war was necessary to accomplish this change.
More lives were lost in that conflict than all other wars in our history - combined.

Really hard to understand how brothers fought brothers and so many died. As a young country, we really have been through a lot, haven't we?
Pat,
True, with a very strong test before us right now. :)

There are so many events planned this week. I thought I heard loud bang just before 7 this morning which woke me up. It could be the first barrage of cannon fire shot at James Island which is not far from where I live now.
War is seldom justified as a means to an end. The Civil War is a great study in the useless loss of human life. Sometimes you have to wonder if we learned anything from it!
We do not have much Civil War history here in Southern California but I do read a lot about it. What an awful time!! I hope we NEVER forget the devastation and loss of life.
Rosalinda,
A lot of romantic overtones to reliving this part of our history. :)

Wayne,
This was a test for the Union - in some sense a mini-revolution for the South to break away and become independent. :)
Steve
Steve,
I don't think we will, but we have to look at that time period to try to understand the motivations of both sides. :)
