The tar sands of eastern Utah, in an area known as the Book Cliffs, have an estimatesd 12-19 billion barrels of recoverable oil in them.
A Canadian company, Earth Energy Resources, Inc., is contemplating mining a 62 acre test site.
There are some 30,000 acres of land that can be mined.
Of course environmentalists are screaming of how it will ruin the land, but I like to think of it as a change in landscaping. What contours are done to the land during excavation and extraction can be managed afterward. We have some very creative landscaoing and design people in this country.
This is a very creative step in recovering domestic oil.

I hope they have a LONG STRAW if they want to bring it up from Canada side!
This is a statue at Signal Hill in Long Beach, CA erected as a tribute to the oil workers who have drilled in the area * these oil rigs are in NUMEROUS movies including LA Confidential and Beverly Hills Cop * and they are still in operation.
Hi Steve. Recovering this oil sounds vaguely familiar. Didn't we start doing this back during the '70's oil crisis? If so, it's too bad we stopped.
When I was in college, it was determined that if oil got to $70/barrel oil sands would be profitable. I bet it is cheaper now to extract it than it was then.
Steve- I saw where a few enviros are freaking out. I vote for drilling.
Congratulations this post is now featured in the Tea Party group of AR.
Wallace,
Familiar with the scenes in Beverly Hills Cop. Thanks for showing the statue. :)
Steve
Bill,
Not sure. Believe they are currently using the sands for paving. :)
Steve
Jay,
I had read $60, but we're way past both numbers now anyway. :)
Steve
Kevin,
I agree. After we extract every drop of oil from our country and the oceans around us we can worry about another type of fuel. :)
Steve
Kevin,
Thanks for the feature. :)
Steve
I read about this in the news yesterday or the day before.
Patricia,
Lot of talk, not much action. :)
