Finally, we may be seeing some serious progress in the Gulf oil spill cleanup, but the Coast Guard is unimpressed.
The world's largest skimmer ship is in place, anchored near Venice, Louisiana in the Mississippi River. The 1,100 foot long converted tanker ship (outfitted only last month in Portugal) can collect and process 500,000 barrels of contaminated water a day - 21 million gallons of oil mixed with water.
The Coast Guard is evaluating its usefulness before actually giving the go ahread. Get it with it already, unless you have a better plan. The last time we looked, you didn't.
The ship is from Taiwan and has been obtained by BP although no contract reportedly exists between the two.
Was the President holding out on us, or was he unaware this even existed?
Glad BP was aware of this tool.

They are painting a reelect Obama sticker on the side. Once this "outfitting" is complete she will put to sea. Not a minute before!
What a tragedy!
The first real sign of hope to get this mess behind us! We have beautiful beaches where I live, and I can just imagine what it would be like to have big blobs of gook arrive on the sand, and see animals dying everywhere.
We often vacationed at Gulf Shores Alabama and are just heartsick that those gorgeous beaches and the wildlife are ruined for years to come. The politcs involved in this fiasco are disgusting to say the least.
it took so long. I just don't understand why we did not accept help from the Netherlands when it first happen.
I think that the President was perfectly willing to let the crisis get worse in order to help him with his agenda. And I think it is truly sick...
Steve...good questions & answers received from the DC crowd are very disheartening to say the least.
too many hours, days, weeks have gone by without someone in the know taking charge. Now that 'alex' has been downgraded perhaps the stall will be ended. Love Doug's comment about the campaign sticker.
Politics, Reality & Actions are often at odds. [LOL]
Barb
Doug,
That would not be a good idea. :)
Steve
Joshua,
One intentionally exacerbated by the Administration. :)
Steve
Sandra,
All this could have been contained within the first week. All it would have taken was leadership - still lacking by the way, :)
Steve
Mary Ann,
And the politics aren't over, or else the spill would be, too. :)
Steve
German,
Because that would have solved the problem, and that wasn't acceptable. :)
Steve
Lane,
I agree. He has to incentive to fix it. :)
Steve
Barb and Sal,
Thanks. We are being manipulated. Nothing new except the stakes are much higher now. :)
Steve
Is that the one that can collect 500,000 barrels a day? We have only picked up 600,000 in 70 somedays. Wonder what the big delay was?
National Security,
The delay was in getting the ship ready. I guess we have the owner of the ship to thank - certainly not the President. :)
Steve
Steve - they are proably putting it through tests to make sure the water is 99.9% oil free, which is the allegded reason we have not been using the Dutch skimmers. It appears we would rather see 100% pollution of the shore than 99.8% oil free water in the depths.
It would certainly be nice if, at this point, they could try to save what can be saved instead of the posturing and hand-wringing.
Obviously B. Hussein O. could have known about this if he was making an effort to solve the problem. He's much more interested in using the crisis to "do things he couldn't otherwise do".
Mike,
I agree, but what difference does it make if it's 100% oil? Let's just start recovering it. :)
Steve
Steve,
They have really wasted weeks of time that could have averted much of the damage. :)
Steve
Jon,
Absoultely correct. He wants a permanent ban on drilling, and this situation is tailor-made for him. :)
Steve
It would seem that BP would be able to get the spill cleaned up if the US Government would just let them get on with it.
Michael,
That's true, but it's not in their agenda. Then the payments would stop, the news stories that keep other items from being discussed, and the impact that will ultimatley lead to a drilling ban. :)
Steve
I think we need another commission to study the coast guards findings. This is how are GOV works now. Analysis Paralysis!
Steve- I just heard about the tanker this morning. Something is better than nothing and so far we've had a big nothing. So if it picks up 500,000 barrels a day that's more than what's being picked up now. And, if it's 99% or 90% oil free, it's still better than what we have.
Kathy,
Thanks. We agree. :)
Steve
Something is better than nothing, but this Something should have been done 2 months ago.
Why isn't the word out about WHY we didn't use this skimmer sooner? I'd like an explanation!
Where is the media?
Melissa,
This particular skimmer was only produced last month; however, there were others. The media is being their typical no-show. :)
Steve
Congratulations this post is now featured in the Silent Majority Group of Active Rain.
Nick,
Thank you for the feature. :)
Steve
Paul,
Why not? :)
