There are several "what if's" that are not a stretch for this BP oil spill.
(1) What if MMS had done their job and shut down the well because it failed the inspections 4 times before April 20th? Does this make MMS responsible? A civil jury would certainly be within their perview to assess blame and damages, finding MMS entirely or majorly at fault.
(2) What if this was the very first oil spill in the Gulf out of all the 4,000 some wells that there are? Wait a minute, it is the first one.
(3) What if the spill had been caused by a Brazilian, Cuban, Venzuelan, or Chinese well? Would our response be any different? The resultant impact any different?
(4) What if there is such a knee jerk reaction that Obama wants to cancel all drilling and furlogh over 300,000 jobs permanently? So much for his jobs program.
(5) What if Charlie Crist, in an effort to look more like Obama than a Republican Governor that he was elected to be, wants to call a special session of the legislature at a waste of taxpayer dollars in a budget shortfall year to put a proposed Constitutional Amendment on the ballot in November to permanently ban offshore drilling in Florida? What if we just banned Crist from office?
(6) What if this oil spill doesn't even make the top 10 oil spills of all-time worldwide? It doesn't.
(7) What if we let private enterprise fix this and bolster our economy at the same time?

What if B.P. was one of the biggest contributors to the Hussein regime? It was!
Jon,
What if Obama wants to give $2 billion to George Soros' Petrobras for ultra-deep water drilling in Brazil - with our rigs? :)
Steve
What if Americans had a second chance again not to elect this socialist in office?
Steve- 4. Obama just wants to cancel all AMERICAN drilling. We also know that the well was leaking on Feb 12. The plot thickens.
Steve-- you have WAAYYY too much common sense to be a politician.
What if Bush decides to come back and run against Obama?
A lot of "What ifs" Steve, all legit. Did you have to throw Charlie Cris in to the mix and get my blood boiling? He is another one who will do and say anything to get into the White House; but thats for another time. I wish Nick was right and we had another chance at the election; although there are still a lot of people who don't understand that what they get "free" we have to pay for. They will vote for him again.
Steve
What if there was a proactive program to clean up the spill when it first happen?
Good luck and success.
Lou Ludwig
What if the government projections upon which the cvompanies were REQUIRED to base response scenarios weren't seriously flawed?
What if the company was actually allowed to use the 'pre-approved' disaster response?
What if skimming barges were allowed onsite sooner instead of being rulled illegal... because the water coming out of the barge still had a little oil in it? (I think it would be ok to have barges pulling even 10% of the oil out of water instead of the 0% they pull out when they are sitting in port... and they were able to pull closer to 85%)...
What if we didn't have an administration that was perfectly willing to destroy the planet and THOUSANDS of busineses in order to deploy their agenda?
Steve.. With the "What if's" aside. I did NOT know that this oil spill was not in the 10 worst ones ever. Learn something new every day.
Steve.. On the other hand I DOOOOOO agree with Nicholas about having a second chance of NOT voting in the socialist. Do you think we'lll get it right next time?
Congratulations this post is now featured in the Silent Majority Group of Active Rain.
Steve what if the environmentalist would let us drill on land and shallower water. This would have been stopped by now.
Nick,
Like the second chance idea. :)
Steve
National security,
Agreed. :)
Steve
Doug,
I suppose so. :)
Steve
Mike,
He can't due to term limits but an interesting question. :)
Steve
Lois,
Well stated. There are many who just need the handout and don't care about or even think about the cost. :)
Steve
Lou,
That would have meant that they knew how to do it with scenarios in place. :)
Steve
Lane,
All very good points. What if the Jones Act had been waived? :)
Steve
Valerie,
It is huge, but not in the top 10. :)
Steve
Valerie,
I think it depends on how many people are "owed" something and how many people still feel they can get more versus those of us who want our country the way it was founded. :)
Steve
Nick,
Thank you for the feature. Appreciate it. :)
Steve
John,
Environmentalists are for the planet first, animals second, people last. :)
Steve
Gosh, oh my, um, gee, Holy Obvious Batman! I didn't hear any of that on the news!
Jay,
Probably not, but this information and these solutions are out there. :)
Steve
Did you see this?
It's making some assumptions, but in the end we will see how it stacks up.
I know that stuff is all out there Steve! I was being fa-see-shus...
Do you think there is a reason so many mistakes are being made? I do...
Never let a crisis go to waste. That line is never going to go away. And if the press would admit it. the line about 95% of Americans getting a tax cut would be one that we hear daily.
Jay,
I did not see that graph. Thanks. :)
Steve
Jay,
Yes, I think its a combination of incompetence and intent. :)
Steve
Dale,
And if there is no crisis, they'll create one (like health care). :)
Steve
There have been plenty of oil spills over the years. Why can't they simply do what others have done to stop the leak? Apparently there are political motives behind this? The Russians have nuked 5 or 6 oil leaks and plugged the hole immediately. Nobody even talks about this.
Rob,
The talk seems to be worth more than the fix. :)
