Another Reason To Support Arizona's New Immigration Law

Aside from the fact that SB 1070 - Arizona's new immigration act - parallels and was patterned after the existing US legislation that Eric Holder and the President refuse to enforce for political reasons (and now want to challenge in court), aside from the fact that it hasn't even become effective yet, aside from the fact that it makes good sense, and aside from the fact that Arizona has a right to protect its borders if the feds won't, here's another excellent reason to know that Arizona did the right thing.

The Mexican government is challenging the law in Arizona state court. A foreign country? How do they have standing? They have no trouble enforcing an immigration law much stricter than what we have, but they have the gumption to challenge this. In Mexico, it's prove that you are legal first, then the police will get to other business with you. In America, as in Arizona, it's a law enforcement issue first, and then a residency issue if it appears suspicious.

If there was any doubt that Arizona was right, this should settle it. Mexico is concerned their citizens won't be able to come to Arizona and get jobs. That's the point. Without work visas, they can't.

Jan Brewer stand your ground against Obama, Holder, Calderon, and anyone else. We the people are counting on you.

Corie,

Thank you. There are way more of us with common sense in this country than there are of them. :)

Well Steve, I'm assuming that you aren't of Latino descent.   You probably don't have to worry about being hassled because of the color of your skin or hair.  That isn't true of many other Arizona American citizens.

I do understand the broader ramifications.  Has anyone figured the costs of having a truly well manned border as balanced against the costs of the leaky border we have now and the costs of dealing with those who get through illegally.

I've found that many people don't understand just how long it takes to be able to become a citizen.  You don't just go and sign up.

Kathy,

Since 1986, it has been illegal to hire undocumented workers in this country. The time it takes be a citizen is as little as little 3 years. We cannot maintain a system of lawas if we turn our back on this one. :)

I do know how long it takes for someone to become a citizen the lawful way. I don't see any other country letting people overflow their boarders and ignoring the laws because its inconvenient or takes too long to become a citizen.  Any other country, including Latin countries, would throw them out or arrest them. And I know what its like to be pulled out of line at an airport, every time I fly, because my hair, eyes, and skin are darker; doesn't bother me one bit. Its a small price to pay for safety.

As far as Mexico sueing us Steve, this will be interesting to watch.  Mexico seems to follow the old saying "Do as I say and not as I do".

Lois,

Thank you very much for your comments. American citizenship is not a birthright for the world. That's why there are almost 200 countries in the world. We need to have very stringent standards in this country - once again Congress is having trouble with one of its enumerated powers. :)

Steve She has my backing.  I don't think she will back away from them.  She has more guts than most of our other elected politicians.

Steve - I applaud the Governor.  She's doing the right thing unlike some elected politicians who are afraid to lose the Latino vote.

Anyone who thinks that some laws are okay to be broken, isn't a very honorable or honest person.  There are  A LOT of things in life that are INCONVENIENT and take a lot of time.  Geez, some people will use anything as justification to get what they want...

If the AZ law stands, then Mexico will have to pay for the upkeep of its citizens, not the US.  It will lose one of it's biggest revenue streams, one that has no expense tied to it.   And of course more enforcement will limit the amount of payoffs those in power receive daily to not enforce laws that stop the illegals and drugs in the first place.

I find comment #3 to be appalling.  I'm not exactly white, but if I'm stopped by the police and asked for my ID, I will produce my DL and dependent's ID.

Just because it's costly to stop illegal crossing doesn't mean we shouldn't.

Three years minimum to become a citizen, if one were eligible and complete the necessary documentation.

Why is Mexico even allowed to file this lawsuit?  What standing do they have?  Just shows how far we have fallen in this country. Obama should be talking about protecting American citizens from these illegal invaders instead of trying to protect the rights of these criminals.  He continues to be an embarassment to all this country was founded on.
