In NYC, where a very great effort of cooperative investigation and law enforcement was able to capture the Time Square bomber, he almost got away.
The plane he was on was cleared for takeoff and was number one for departure - seconds away from a totally different outcome.
If it wasn't for the Custom and Border Patrol (CBP) people doing their job and spotting him on the no-fly list - after the plane had left the gate with him aboard - this could have gone quite differently.
Today a new rule went into effect that the airlines must check their no-fly list for updates within 2 hours of a flight. The old rule was 24 hours. Can't they use email and texting at the airports?
Here's the biggie for me. A single guy shows up a little before the flight with no reservation. He pays $700 cash for a one-way ticket to Dubai - and he has no luggage. Does any part of this seem unusual? Any red flags?

Great point, with that type of booking, and with that type of destination, you would think "experience" would raise up and smack someone in the back of the head and said, "What a minute, you better look a little further"
Thank you
Steve: sounds like profiling to me. In order to be fair we have to make sure we search grandma's socks and check that little Suzy isn't strapping. Focusing on a segment of the populace that fits to a tee those that most often commit terrorist acts just makes too much sense.
I heard that news earlier today and I was shocked. With so many check points in place how does something like this go unnoticed. It makes me wonder how many actually do slip through from time to time. I hope they plug that hole up quickly and permanently.
In the end, they got him. Thank God for that. I suspect the rules have changed....At least I hope so.
Debi
I wonder how many get caught before they are able to follow through. It is frightening to think about it. Thanks goodness for the excellent law enforcement agencies and workers that catch so many of these potential terrorists.
Doesn't it just make you look at the fellow passengers now more critically before they board the same plane as you? Poor New York, they seem to always be a prime target for these jerks.
My RED FLAGS started with the landlord who rented to him in Feb who SHOULD have checked his credit to see the FORECLOSURE in September; who should have QUESTIONED why a guy renting a 2BR apt needs so many bags of fertilizer in his garage and why and where he lost his apartment keys BEFORE allowing him entry into the apt.
Steve...
Sometimes solutions are so simple that they are often overlooked.
I think that it is very often luck that allows these guys to be captured - not some government system of detection.
Wow that is kind of scary, and you know if he would have gotten away we would have never know that they knew he left.

Steve, Another tragedy prevented, thank goodness! I'm glad that some people are paying attention...otherwise...I'd hate to think of the outcome.
Due to the mental illness called political correctness, they wouldn't dare question a mid-easterner. Instead, they keep busy searching granny. So what if a few hundred innocent people are killed? At least they didn't insult a Muslim!
Look the other way, nothing to see here. "These aren't the droids you are looking for"
Scott,
Precisely. Thanks. :)
Steve
Matt,
Since experinece has shown that these "tells" usually are worth checking out, why the pass? :)
Steve
John,
It really does give us pause. :)
Steve
Debi,
The rules that should have applied have been in place since 9/11. :)
Steve
Samantha,
We have to be grateful for all of the successes - and they don't happen by accident. :)
Steve
Don,
NYC will continue to be targeted because of what it represents. :)
Steve
Wallace,
All good questions, but then that's why you're in sales. :)
Steve
Richard,
Yes, and where is common sense? :)
Steve
Steve.. I'm glad he was caught. But as you mentioned why can't one text? Or did I misunderstand that? As far as the guy buying a ticket to Dubai.. MONEY TALKS!! We have to stop this.
Valerie,
If they had just followed their procedures, that would have been enough to keep him off the plane. :)
Steve
Gary,
Luck had a lot to do with keeping him on the ground. :)
Steve
Shelton,
You're right. They would have no frame of reference to begin checking. :)
Steve
Wanda,
Some people were paying attention and then this guy was a little sloppy. :)
Steve
Jon,
Agreed. :)
Steve
Todd,
Right. :)
Steve
Steve - We might not be too lucky the next time. In today's world of instant messaging, the communicationn between the government and the airport personnels failed miserably.
Rosalinda,
I agree on both counts. Thanks. :)
