Not In My Backyard

So much for energy independence. Sounds great, as long as it can be done in laboratory settings. Clean coal, clean oil wells, no impact from solar or wind farms. But as soon as one thing goes wrong - a spill, a platform or rig collapse or explosion, a mining explosion - all bets are off.

Senator Bill Nelson of Florida says no to drilling. Too bad. Florida is the perfect place to drill. We are practically surrounded by water.

Ponder this. There are untold reserves of oil and natural gas just off our coast. If we don't tap them, China, Venezuela, and Cuba just might. And what if it was one of their platforms that ruptured? Would we still have the impact we're seeing now? Absolutely. Only we wouldn't have the opportunity to get the money and the oil from the efforts.

Oh, if it was their wells and they caused the mess, would they clean it up? Really?

Drill now and drill often - unless you like $5 gas.

There will always be issues with any manmade plans and to not drill is reckless. As you have stated above someone is going to drill and it might as well be us.

Steve.. If I had oil in my backyard, and drilling would make the price of gas go DOWN... Drill on man, drill on.

Valerie,

I'd drill in my yard, too. :)

Steve how many of these cry babys you think drive a car and run air conditioner?  This doesn't come from Disney.  Louisiana has made billions off of the oil industry.  I have fished the oil rigs and harvested the bounty it attracts.  We also didn't suffer the downturn as bad as a lot of the country because of a well diversified economy.  Our politicians really are spineless.

I would like to keep the American dollar in the country.

Good luck and success.

How about clean nuclear power. Have an Indian reservation build one where the government can't say no because they are considered a sovereign nation.

Steve: Those are great points and valid questions to consider.

Stuff happens, and I don't think ANYONE is going to be more prepared than a company doing business in the US..  A chinese rig or one from Cuba would likely =NOT have the same safety systems.

But I DO think there needs to be an independent investigation (non-governmental) of what happened.  It is just too convenient for the leftists...

I do think as well there needs to be n investigation - this is something that needs to be addressed - this is an oil spill and the governemtn took ten days to send help?

$5 may be optimistic!

The question should be ...is it in our best interest to have drilling by the other countries off our shoreline. When they have an accident will they care about the potential damage to our coastline?

We'll continue to use oil, it will be drilled by someone, why not us? This isn't that hard to understand!

Posted by Jon Budish - CDPE (Remax Action Brokers, CDPE - Northern Colorado) about 2 years ago

Well said Gary and Jon.  The oil will be drilled.  Our government has even given BILLIONS to a south american country (can't remember which one) to drill in the gulf!  So they will spend the taxpayers money on it, but won't allow US to drill it??  Insane.

Nick,

Isn't the silence deafening? No one seems to mind that it's taking this long to try to install a cap. :)
