Country Comes To Standstill

I never knew how important the Census was. I just saw a commercial that talked about how the local schools, and health care, and roads were dependent on completion of the Census. Yes, dependent.

Their slogan is is "mail it back so we can move forward." We are are at a total standstill until those Census results get counted. Imagine, not being able to move the country forward without our answers to this survey.

No wonder they are spending incredible amounts of money to tell people to fill it out.

Well, I'm convinced - not to fill it out - that we have way too many entitlement programs and a lack of leadership.

you might want to look into that Steve

if you fail to complete the Census it is a Misdemeanor with penalty up to $5,000

I could care less about the money, but the record....

The advertisements cost far less than having people go door to door.  The census has been in existence since the late 1700s and is a wealth of fascinating and important data about our country. All the nuttiness about it is simply more evidence of the Dark Age we're sliding into.

The Constitution requires that the government perform a census to know how many people live in each area of the country...  Not our age, race and spending habits.

from my link above.

pg 3 #10-- What are the penalties if I do not respond to the survey?

  • Title 13 U.S.C., section 221 makes it a misdemeanor to refuse or willfully neglect to complete the questionaire or answer questions posed by census takers and imposes a fine of not more than $100.   This fine is changed byt the Sentencing Reform Act of 1984 from $100 to not more than $5000

Elizabeth,

The first census was done in 1790. It took months to complete and was done by the census takers riding around the countryside as well as visiting people in the towns. The headcount is all that is required. The original census asked only the name of the head of household, and numbers of people in 5 other categories. :)

Daniel,

It'll get done, but the fine is just $100. :)

Daniel,

Some reform. They need to agree. The Census Director recently mentioned the $100 nad $500 numbers. :)

I have a different perspective on the Census.  I am passionate about genealogy, and know the importance an older census can be in tracking down ancestors.  They ought to be releasing the 1940 census for public viewing before long, if they haven't already.

However, that being said, I have been appalled by the amount of postage that has been spent on this thing.  I received (1) a message that the census was coming. (2) the actual census form (3) a message that if I hadn't already filled it out and sent the census in, that I should.  The census must be a major fund raiser for the USPS.

I am in favor of filling out the census and sending it in though.  The number of congressional seats and services in YOUR area are determined by the numbers from the census in your area.  That's not just social services - but roads, and other infrastructure.  You should want your district to be included at the dinner table:-)

funny thing, they are saying only a small percentage of Census forms have been returned so far.

I have yet to receive one!

Myrl,

All of these entitlement and revenue sharing issues tied to population. Not good. Just collect less to start with and let the States and cities do their own work.:)

Daniel,

This is panning out to be a dismal failure. :)
