Papers, Please

Can you believe that we are living in the land of the free? Not when Chuck Schumer and Lindsay Graham are on the loose. They are meeting with Obama tomorrow to propose their progressive government watchdog registration program.

They want every worker in America - citizen or green card - to have a government issued ID card. Just to prove you are legally employable - at first. Then, it's possible for a whole host of activities that the government can foist upon us under the label of national security. Think checkpoints.

No way is this Constitutional.

We have never been subjected to the government being able to track our movements or knowing where we are. Can't happen? Wouldn't happen? You'd like to think so, but it's just a small step once everyone is registered with a scanable national ID. Depends on who wants to use the technology and data on the cards.

What about self-employed? Do we have to have one, too?

And you honestly believe that these cards can't be counterfeited? A whole new black-market enterprise.

I don't even have a library card.  Ain't gonna happen.  I'm NOT getting one.  I have a birth certificate and a SS card and a DL.  I'm ID'd enough already.

Steve.. This is where I draw the line.  We only have 3 years left.. I hope the AMERICAN public wakes up.  What I feel is that most are thinking this is ok.. because they AREN'T from this country originally, and not truly know what "the land of the free" means.

Steve

There is a system in place every citizen has a social security card and every foreign national in the country in the United State with a visa  have an Individual taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) card.

Good success and success.

Steve - I'm not sure checkpoints would even be of much use as a tracking device these days, considering all of the technology already present to do the job.  Consider this very recent triple homicide in the Chicago suburbs, and the length of time it took to catch the alleged killer and find the evidence.

After a three A.M break-in and triple murder, between a cell phone signal and security cameras, the authorities had the alleged murderer, the accomplices, the beneficiary of the murders, as well as the evidence, within two days of the killings.  They arested the alleged murderer while he was sleeping in his van, I believe, outside of his grandparents' home in Florida.

So, really, by the time the guy drove from Illinois to Florida, and slept for a few hours, the authorities had tracked his stopping points from an hour before the murders to his final destination as a free man.  And they knew exactly which dumpster to find the evidence.  They had him before the funeral for the victims, which took place yesterday.

Checkpoints?  I think we're way beyond that.  I can't see national ID cards being much more of a threat to privacy than the commercial technology to which we have already (implicitly) consented.

My heart goes out to the friends and family of the victims whom I used to illustrate my point.

Lou,

True we already have registration cards. This proposal is more egregious and invasive. :)

Patrick,

It is the privacy that we all should be concerned about. Thanks. :)

Wallace,

Sounds like we may need a few thousand photographers to go around taking pictures - that will help the jobs picture - for a short while. :)

I have a better idea. Since they are supposed to work for US, we should demand they wear ankle bracelets so we can track EVERY place they go!

Steve,  From what Ron Paul said today there are concerns that a secret GPS chip might be embedded in these cards. Then the government could track our every movement and know what we were doing.

I am sick and tired of hearing all this Orwellian communist crap coming out of this administration and White House.

Who can stand 3 more years of this?  Unless radical changes are made in the Congress and the Senate in Nov, that will effectively thwart his efforts, we are in for a really rough time.

Transform America.  Yup that's what he promised.  Do ya see it yet?

This has to be one of the scariest things I've read in a long time...  These people need to be kept away from children.
