The American people are being misled, and we appear to accept it.
The President is freezing spending, and we think that's a good idea. It's a horrible idea and a trick.
If a department had a budget of $1 billion (a very small department) for 2010 (the fiscal year we're in the middle of now) and it wants a 2011 budget of $1.2, freezing it merely keeps it at the $1 billion level. It doesn't reduce it to "0."
It sounds like when you are freezing spending or freezing the budget that you are stopping it - putting it on ice. This is just government-speak for the status quo. It means that you get no budget increase - or decrease.
Another little trick the President has is that when budgets are frozen that they are inaccessible from attack, reduction, or elimination by Congress for 3 years. This is another backdoor way of circumventing the Constitutional authority of Congress.
Congress needs to deny every non-defense spending that it can - especially every single earmark. In another year or so, they won't even be able to do this because the entire budget will be frozen as a way of taking away more of their power.

Steve...you and are being spun...and apathy by folks that feel frustrated to do anything about it makes it worse. Small business is the economic work horse of this nation's economy...not making government bigger and bigger. Thinking Uncle Sam will fix every boo boo, take care of us..is expensive. You and I need to on the local level pull ourselves up by the bootstraps and be less dependent on the spending machine.

When Americans look back in a couple of years to ask what happened, they can blame themselves for being ignorant for so long, and allowing these thugs to destroy our future.
You are so right that a budget "freeze" doesn't really do any good. And that on the heels of congress voting themselves raises after not giving SS recipients COL raises just ticks me off to no end. There sit my parents, their investments tanked, no COL raise for 3 years and congress got a raise. Interesting numbers over the years.
I am tired of the President of the United States playing tricks on the citizens who do not know the antics of Washington - people in the "know" realize this is such a deception - it goes beyond words!
