There Oughta Be A Law

There oughta be a law banning this or that - and many times there is.

As more and more jurisdictions are passing laws banning the use of cellphones (or at least holding in your hand while using on it) for calls, texting, or emailing while driving, we need to ask ourselves if they have gone far enough.

There are so many other unregulated activites that could cause a driver's attention to wander.

We should prohibit listening to the radio, adjusting stations, playing CDs on the built-in player or portable device, talking with passengers, daydreaming, singing, putting on lipstick, using an electric razor, playing the guitar, eating a hamburger, drinking a softdrink or coffee, chewing gum, looking at billboards, thinking about the appointment we are driving to, and anything else that distracts us from our driving.

Now that I think about it, we probably should ban driving altogether.

Steve, Yes, the only way to be safe is to ban driving all together! Thanks for a view we all can agree with!

Steve, don't ban my daydreaming! I'd never get from point A to point B without it :)

Steve, you could probably add another 25 items to the list, which makes your point. Like everyhting else, I'm sure the "elites" that make the rules, aren't expected to abide by them.

Hannah,

Why not? There are many in the government that would approve. :)

That is reducing to the ridiculous, I'd say. :)

Jon,

It's a typical governmental, knee-jerk, over-response. :)

Our texting ban goes into effect this Tuesday in NC.  Can I still check my emails on my BB so long as I don't reply?

When they ban writing notes to myself while driving I'm doomed.

Steve, You forgot to mention coughing, sneezing, and my all time favor.. blinking. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

Steve,  It has gone too far, although I see the need to prohibit texting especially with young people and their accident rate.

Even Maria Schriver was caught on her cell phone in Ca. So much for 0beying the law.

If we banned all the things you mentioned we'd all go to sleep while driving and there'd be more accidents!  LOL

Linda,

So just how are they going to enforce this anyway? :)

When personal responsibility fails to govern us, government is ready to step in. :)

Awww, but Steve, isn't that what red lights are for?  A chance to do all these things.

Seems like every time I get somebody driving too slow or not going when the light turns green, it is because they are talking to nobody important on their cell phone. Not sure if banning them is the way to go, but I wouldn't be opposed to it.

Steve- Our liberal friends would like a law for everyrthing. Basically we need to protect ourselves, from ourselves.

Steve, No matter how many laws they pass, you can't force people to use common sense.  Maybe they need to pass a law that everyone should take a class on common sense.  Oops!

Jenny,

Ever notice how you never get a red light when you need one? :)

Where do you stop? Curtailing one freedom and then another. Besides on local roads there is no minimum speed. :)

That's so true Steve.  We used to hate red lights now we can't wait for them.  What's wrong with us???

Posted by Jenny Kotulak (Broker RE/MAX Aboutowne Realty Corp., Oakville, Ontario) over 2 years ago

Steve,

Here we have the handsfree cell law. Sometimes I spend more time being distracted trying to fiddle with the stupid earpiece that I would otherwise, the old way.
