A Procrastinator's Dream

President Obama has had more than enough time to make a decision about prosecuting the war in Afghanistan. In fact, I think he has made a decision to wind it down, but he just can't come out and say it yet.

First, he needed a report from McChrystal that he got in August. Then he needed time to read it.

Then, Gibbs said that the President would need several weeks before announcing his decision.

Then, there is the little, convenieint issue of the Karsai election. Karsai has agreed to a "runoff" type election. And the results are going to be different this time?

Nevertheless, the President said that he didn't want to make any commitments until he knew which government he was going to be working with - like it's going to change with this new election.

And what is the President doing calling Karsai and congratulating him on having a new election? It's not really our concern - only the outcome. What if Karsai should lose?  There's no chance of that, but not a real strategic move by the President.

Now, Gates says make the decision already. We need more troops. Of course, Gates is assuming that the President will commit more troops. I'm not so sure. If that's what he was willing to do, seems like he would already have done it.

Now, his generals are pressuring him.

Still have to wait on that election though. Then I wonder what we won't like about that election that will push off the announcemnet of the decision even further?

Meanwhile, our men and women are fighting and dying there.

It really shows how little he values our soldiers lives! This should be a wake up call for those who are willing to give him more responsibility in our everyday lives.

Steve - Politics stinks when you try to mix it with war. You would think we learned that lesson in Vietnam.

John,

When wars drag on people lose interest. That's why a quick decisive attack is best. :)

Steve with all due respect- there's no way we can expect the support of the people with an illegitimate government in place. This was a brilliant move by the President.

If he doesn't do this, the right will be all over his @ss in 6 months, asking him why are we propping up an illegitimate government.

Well,

These are interesting times and I think we all tend to not agree to agree

Nogul,

I understand what you're saying but don't see anything changing after the election. Convenient is maybe the best description. :)

Steve,

I'm not sure we really have a clear purpose or vision here. :)

Wait for the election or run off which can be weeks away.  He promised more troops earlier this year and only a few went over.  The balance is still being mobilized and deployed.  That was about 8 months ago he agreed to those troops.

Even if he agrees to deploy more troops - how long will it take for them to get there?  Our soliders need reinforcements now no matter what government is in power to ensure their safety so they are not continually over run.

Bonnie,

Those troops that went were actually authorized last year. :)
