As schools start up or get ready to go back into session across the country, we have an opportunity to take an active role in our educational system.
Many of us have an hour or two a week that we could volunteer to help someone learn to read - or to do it better - who is having difficulty doing so.
Because the people I'm talking about usually are Washington - or at least they should be - much of the tutoring I propose will have to be done over the phone and intenet.
That's right, I'm talking about helping to save our country by teaching a Member of Congress to read.
Shouldn't they know how to read by now? One would think so, but let's not be too harsh on them. Let's just help them get to a reading level where they can read the legislation that they are considering.
It's a real shame to have our Members of Congress consistently refrain that they didn't read the bills put before them. It's probably difficult for them to admit they need help.
Remember, reading is fundamental. It's our patriotic duty to help if we can.

Steve: You had me there for a second. It appalls me that our representatives in DC vote for Bills based on their understanding of the total Bill on what would amount to Cliffs Notes.
Chris Ann,
I'm not even sure they have that level of understanding. In some cases they vote because their leadership tells them to. Sometimes, they rely totally on their staff for information. :)

Steve, I love this! I'm glad you somewhat have a sense of humor over this and are able to get the message out there. What to do? I'm not sure.
Hello Steve, you post remined me of a famous quote...
It will be of little avail to the people that the laws are made by men of their own choice if the laws be so voluminous that they cannot be read, or so incoherent that they cannot be understood.

said many moons ago yet still applies today!
great points

Wanda,
Actually there are 4 things we can do that I recommend we all get behind:
(1) require single issue bills
(2) require a signature that the bill has been read before being along to debate it or vote on it
(3) insist that all bills be kept to a single page
(4) replace all incumbents!
Thanks. :)
Steve
Grace,
Exactly right. Check out my Home Sales Insights post on Wednesday. :)
Steve
Steve, Then let's do it!
Wanda,
Would love to. Number 4 is the easiest. The others will take a little work although there is some momentum there already. The problem is that the Congress would have to agree to it. Refer to #4 again. :)
