Congress wants to spend $550 million to buy 8 jets to replace their aging fleet - which is totally understandable. Can't have those guys flying around on uncomfortable, outdated equipment.
Let's see. There are 535 members of Congress, and this is a $550 million proposed expenditure - I make that at a little better than $1 million per person. Nice little perk - if you can get it.
I've read that it costs something like $3,000 per hour to operate one of these planes, but that is supposed to be cost effective over commercial transportation.
Let's look a little deeper. Having the plane is one thing. Then there's maintenance and fuel. There is a storage hanger and airfield - and landing fees at the other end. There are pilots and mechanics and crew and chefs - and food and beverage. Begins to add up.
So my recommendation is (1) forget the new planes completely, (2) sell the ones you have now and get out of the flying business, (3) fly commercial when you have to travel, and (4) stay home more.
You can't convince me that all of these round the world junkets are necessary.

Steve, I think it's time the "people" started making decisions on how the Congress should act, and not vice versa. Congress has gotten too elite and too pampered. Time for some big changes.
Bob,
I have a really off-the-wall idea that Congress should tele-commute and have their primary office in their district - with posted office hours. :)
Steve
Bob is absolutely right! It's time to get rid of all the "elites", and replace them with public servants.
Steve, in addition to you list, I would include ...
4. Travel Amtrak and get to know the real America.
5. Travel Greyhound or Trailways bus (if either of them are still running). Another great way to get to know the real America.
Jon,
We're in total agreement. Imagine if one of them got stuck on a plane on the taxiway for 3 hours - bet something might get done about it. :)
Steve
Bob,
That works. BTW, saw a Greyhound on the Turnpike a couple of weeks ago - didn't know they were still around. :)
Steve
It is like the health care bill, they are willing to shove it on us, but unwilling to use it themselves!
George,
This should be called the "meme" Congress - everything for themselves. :)
Steve
It's something to think think about, mostly, that it's bad timing.

Richard,
Thank you. Appreciate the feature. Bad timing, bad sense of responsibility. :)

In NC, our elected officials just wrapped up their latest work period, creating a budget that includes millions in freebees to those that lobby them. They are expected back to work.......in May of 2010. Wish I had that job.
