Congress has an official Code of Ethics that is voluminous and written in so much legalize that loopholes abound. It would be nice if it were reduced to a single page that every voter could have and read - so we would know what to hold them accountable for in terms of conduct.
Then there's the new 2009 unofficial guide.
The principal tenant of it is to let staffers to all their work as far as reading and interpreting what is in a bill. Here's what's wrong with that. It abdication of responsibility and unauthorized delegation of official duties. Congress has but two official duties: read all legislation coming before it (apparently much harder than it would seem) and become totally informed about it before casting and intelligent vote.
That last one is a real stickler. When John McCain and Barack Obama wanted to run for the presidency, they should have resigned their seats. You can't be having a chicken dinner in Des Moines and be in Washington to cast a vote at the same time. Either you are a candidate for another office or you are an elected representative doing your sworn duty.
Then we have the so-called town meetings which usually are way too large to resemble anything that can be called by that name. But the citizens are angry at the shenanigans of the legislators. So what are the elected reps doing? They're no-shows. They cancel the meetings or send a staffer. Cute.
There have to a few people out of 535 who really do get it and do want to serve. Let's see if we can identify those and throw the rest out.

Steve, AMEN!
Tony and Darcy,
Thanks for standing with me on this one. :)
Steve
I agree! But how do we get the politicians out of politics? That's the rub!
Anne,
That is a huge rub. A good start is to replace nearly everyone in office. :)
Steve
It doesn't matter if the ethics are new or not, they are totally ignored anyway. It is a pity that those who govern have no character or conscience.
Gaylen,
Yes, you'd think there would be more interest in the public trust. :)
Steve
Steve,
Agreed. We need to identify those with hearts of service and throw the rest out. It's time for accountability. That goes for me too-I'm becoming a better informed citizen.
Tammy,
The information is there if we take the time to find it. Too bad Congress doesn't feel the same way. :)
Steve
Steve, I fully agree. Now, if we could only get someone to write the freaking bill.
Hi Steve
The Realtors have a seventeen article Code of Ethics that's clearly defines the Realtors responsibility. You can't read and understand the Congressional Code of Ethics. They need to be redone in plain English and reduced to several pages.
Good luck and success.
Lou Ludwig
It is time to throw them out. We must not put up with this anymore.
Bob,
I'm sure anyone could write it in about a half-hour. Pretty straightforward stuff really. :)
Steve
Lou,
I was thinking of the Realtor Code or many of those the NAHB uses for it's various designation programs. Shouldn't be hard to come up with a one-pager. :)
Steve
Kevin,
The steam is building. If we can just release it at the right time. :)
