Calling All Firefox Experts

Last night firefox just went away. Oh, the desktop and quick launch icons were still there, but it wouldn't load. Click on - nothing - except that it was running in the background and not responsive. Deleted 3.0.11 (the version I had been using), except that I had to stop it in processes before it would let me continue with the uninstall.

I've redownloaded and reinstalled firefox 3.0.4 and 3.0.11 so many times Ive lost count. Only once - long enough for me to make one comment - did it load before it went non responsive.

Unless I can find a solution, It's back to IE 7 - where I am right now. Already been kicked off once for "runtime error" - whatever that is. And oh, IE is sooooooooooo slow.

Any ideas? I've done the defrag, msconfig, and all the other stuff that I could think of.

Not sure.  Press ctrl+alt+delete to pen the task manager.  In the applications section, close all firefox apps which may be running.  Then try again.  If all else fails, reboot.  Then it should work.  I use firefox and nothing but.

Rebecca,

Thanks. Great suggestions. Have done that several times - nothing. :)

As Rebecca said, run Task Manager and make sure every instance of Firefox has stopped running.  You may also want to run a virus checker too, just in case.

Please restart your computer, first of all. If you're using Windows Vista, it's your operating system, not your browser. Vista has a lot of serious problems and negative interactions with many types of software, even internet browsers.

Try uninstalling the program from the "Add and Remove Programs" icon in Control Panel. Afterwards, and this is important, find the Mozilla folder in your Program Files directory (C:\windows\program_files\Mozilla) and rename it (Mozilla2). Then try reinstalling from a fresh download on mozilla.org from there. If you no longer have the problem, it could have been something in your original Mozilla folder.

If that doesn't work, get Google Chrome. You might find you like it. Combine Chrome with privoxy and you'll get super fast downloads and no more slow banner ads that slow sites down.

Correction to my last statement, since I recognize most people don't know they are 'downloading' ever time they load a page:

*If that doesn't work, get Google Chrome. You might find you like it. Combine Chrome with privoxy and you'll get super fast PAGE downloads and no more stupid banner ads that slow page downloads down.

Steve,

Sorry to hear about the problem. I had a problem with my blogs last weekend. What a big hassle. Still not really fixed, the old ones, but at least the posts are behind me now.

Roger,

Thank you. Tried all that - more than once. Still nothing. :)

Alis,

Thanks. I'm trying Google Chrome again - it looks better this time around. :)

Steve,

Funny how everything goes humming along for a nice period of time then not so good for a few days. :)

Steve...I will check with a friend of mine this morning as she uses nothing but Firefox.  I have Google Chrome but it's not a panacea.  I have problems with it in our MLS and also with photos on A|R.  So I toggle between the 2.  If I learn anything I'll either come back here or call.

Gail,

Thank you. I finally had to delete firefox and abandon it for now. I started using Chrome. It's much better than when it first came out. The only issue is that it is so slow uploading pictures and you have to us HTML to resize them instead of clicking on them and expanding them. :)

Steve...on my girlfriend's old computer, which she just replaced....Firefox was crashing all the time.  So she downloaded the beta version which is 3.5 and it worked fine.  On her new computer she chose do go back to 3.0.11 and she is having no problem.  She recommended that you try the Beta.  Good luck.

Gail,

That is something I will try. Thanks. However, I do like the look of Chrome and the fact that you can just paste copy into it with a Ctrl+V instead of right click. Will keep you posted. :)

Gail,

I downloaded 3.5 and it is working. I'll keep with for now. Not going back to 3.0.11 - no need since there obviously were some issues. Thanks for this great suggestion. :)
