What A Way To Spend An Evening

About 4 hours ago I started cleaning up the data on my computer because it was acting like I had somehow spilled peanut butter in it. Did the normal diagnostics, cleanups, defrags. Then I did several uninstalls of obsolete or useless programs that I had managed to invest in over the past couple of years.

Then it was time for another round of cleanup and defrag.

So far I have managed to shave an amazing 3 minutes off the startup but it is still way too long.

After posting this and reading some other posts, it's back to tweaking this some more.

Is there a computer gnome someplace that is just laughing himself silly right now?

Steve, don't you wish you were a computer guru.  I wish I had a twelve year old on call to fix all my computer problems.

Russ,

I think I know enough to be dangerous, and that's about it. :)

Alice,

Thanks. I'm not sure if I'm making progress or not, but I don't think I'm losing any ground. :)

That is a cool ClusterMap that you have on your right side of your blog here.  Have to check into that.

Wanda,

I appreciate the offer, but I didn't really spill anything - that was just a simile. :)

Rhonda,

I have this on-going urge to delete everything and start over, but so far I have resisted it. :)

Rhonda,

Please do. I found it from someone here on AR, so go ahead and get one for yourself. :)

Steve - My Help Desk (my son) moved out years ago and I am trying to learn as much as I can about computers but I still feel lost sometime.  Wish my son come home for vacation.

Steve,

I hate to start any task like that. I always end up pulling my hair out and whining.

Very frustrating and annoying little creatures these computers!  You may cut time off the startup but will probably cut time off your life in the process!

there is something to be said to how much your time is worth.  Would you have spent as much time with an unqualified buyer.

Steve, get a Mac!  I have a PC that I use every so often, and I can't get over how slow the thing is.

Steve,

As an inspector I would think that this kind of problem-solving would be right in your groove. :)

Sharon,

Waiting so long for the startup defintely takes time off my life. That's one reason I hardly ever reboot. :)

Shelton,

I think I missed something here since one is essential to my business and the other is not. :)

Patricia,

When they get Macs down under $500, I'll consider it. :)

Steve, I feel your pain and have gone through what you are talking about with the slowness as well. Pat Kennedy says if I do get an Apple MacBook my IQ points will shoot up. I am starting to be a believer in that direction and want to toss the PC. I see she commented above too about what a dog PCs are.

Gary,

They've just got to come down in price first. Look at the iphones - quite reasonable. :)

If you've not tried this, give it a go:

Click start.

Click run.

Type "msconfig" without the quotes in the box that opens up. Click OK.

Click the Startup tab.

Uncheck all the boxes of programs that you don't want to run on start up.

Click Apply and then OK.

Restart your computer and see if it starts any quicker.

Lastly, when your computer restarts a box will open during the startup. Just click no.

Lather. Rinse. Repeat.

Steve, 3 minute start up?! You have my condolences. (some mornings are peanut butter mornings for my brain) I Like Craig's easy advise I'll try everything but the "rinse" part.

Kathleen,

With these processors that are lightening fast, I don't understand why everything is so slow to load. :)
