Happy Loyalty Day

Today is May 1st or May Day - so Happy May Day. Happy Loyalty Day also. Never heard of it - not too surprising.

For years, May Day was celebrated in the former USSR and other countries as a chance to parade their troops, trucks, tanks, rockets, and other military hardware. It's known as Solidarity Day or Labor Day.

So that we wouldn't be left out, President Eisenhower signed a bill in 1958 making May 1st Law Day or Loyalty Day. Law Day is for the lawyers and those in the legal profession. Loyalty Day is for all of us.

Loyalty Day is a little known, little recognized, little promoted day in this country when it should be a big deal.

In contrast to socialism, communism, and totalitarianism, Loyalty Day says we are Americans, proud of and grateful for our heritage, liberties and freedoms.

Happy Loyalty Day my fellow entrepreneurs and American citizens.

Interesting news about Loyalty Day.  I think the president should observe this and stop apologizing for our country.

Steve, Happy loyalty day and yes it's true about what you said about Russia's May Day, their other bigger celebration parade is Victory Day on every May 9th. Thankfully Russia is experiancing greater freedoms than it once did including freedoms in the market place which produces more freedoms from that over time. Regards,

Sandra,

Loyalty is a big term with a lot of implications. It's OK to have disagreements at home, but not in public. :)

Steve:  I had no clue what May Day was all about.  But now another post I read makes a heap of a lot more sense.  Glad I stopped by.

Steve, we used to celebrate it as May Day here as well.  I can remember when I was a kid doing the Maypole dance.  It was also a celebration of "labor" as in "Labor Day."  Because all of Europe also celebrates May 1, some of which were communist at the time, the McCarthy hysteria took hold and we certainly couldn't have a May Day too, for fear of communist influence.  Thus it was changed to Loyalty Day and "labor day" was moved to September.

Terry,

Thanks for that historical update. Wasn't aware of the May Labor Day celebration in this country. :)

Steve - I was not aware of "Loyalty Day". BTW - in the U.S. Labor Day has been celebrated in the U.S. in the fall since the 1880's, but not an official day until 1894. I know that Terry will challenge that but you can look at when presidents before the 50's gave their labor day speeches, always on the first Monday in September.

Mike,

I had always thought growing up that Labor Day celebrated the American worker and didn't realize that it's focus is unionized labor. :)

Steve - Interesting... because the local bar celebrates law day each year.  I didn't realize it had a federal connection.  Law Day is typically a day for education and outreach services.  Past Law Days have included working with homeless veterans to address outstanding warrants, housing issues, and referrals to social service organizations.

Ryan,

I don't hear about that many Law Day observances. I'd say your area has a good one. :)
