Today might be a birthday or anniversary for some. Maybe an important appointment is scheduled. To others it may be just another day.
This day, however, marks the 144th anniversary of the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln - the first of what unfortunately would be more over the years.
Maybe it was from growing up in Springfield, Illinois - Lincoln's home before going to Washington - but this date has always been one that I have remembered.
We can all second-guess history and even events in our own lives, but oh, how things might have been different if not for a fateful moment on this day in 1865.

This sketch by Currier and Ives is considered by Wikipedia to be the finest of this particular event, and it resides in the Library of Congress. It is now part of the public domain.

the Great turn of events that one shoot brought .. Lincoln has become real popular again
Eric,
From what I have read, Lincoln had real compassion for the South - and that could have made a huge difference. :)
Steve
Steve, Right now our Founding Fathers and Lincoln are rolling over in their graves, mad as hell about the State of their country. We the people need to make sure we keep their vision alive!
Tony,
It's not just "their" country although they certainly had a lot to do with its direction - it's our country. Make way for tomorrow's Tea Parties! :)
Steve
Steve: A short and sweet history lesson. I would never have known that it was the anniversary of Lincoln's assassination. I can, however, tell you the date that Pearl Harbor was bombed. That was drilled into my head as a kid.
Steve - I wonder what the tea party turn-out is going to be... :)
Chris Ann,
Like I said, living in Lincolnland probabably had a lot to do with it. :)
Steve
Debi,
I hope their estimates are severly understated. :)
Steve
Hi Steve
Abraham Lincoln was a great president that still impacts the country after 144 years. His was life way short but was very full.
Good luck and success
Lou Ludwig
Lou,
Lincoln certainly had his detractors in his day, but I do think he knew how to lead and to command respect. :)
Steve
Steve,
I think that most historians rate Lincoln at the top of the list as far as Presidents go.
I went to the Lincoln exhibit in DC not long ago. I saw the hat he was wearing that night. I also saw a plaster mask taken from his face. You could see every wrinkle, pore, and mole. Pretty amazing to be close to greatness.
Steve,
He's got to be right up there at the top. :)
Steve
Linda,
That is something special. I have toured his home, law office, and other areas associated with him in Springfield many times. :)
Steve
Steve, I do understand about remembering the day. I don't remember this day but do remember November 22nd.
Judi,
That day in November is one many of us remember. :)
Steve
Lincoln is one of my favorites. Most presidents are not recognized for the true impact of their presidency until long after they gone and Lincoln is not exception. I agree with Tony though. They are all rolling over in our graves right now at our current political landscape.
Michele,
We have lost our way and are far off the path that we originally walked. :)
