As I sit here composing my 600th Active Rain post, I'm thinking just how hard this would have been had I been limited to a traditional typewriter - manual or electric. I'm not a great typist. I am a pretty good speller, but not when I'm typing. The ideas and my fingers get ahead of my spelling.
If it were possible (and of course we know that it isn't without scanning, uploading, and several additional steps) to type a post and then publish it - much like copywriters and reporters at newspapers used to do before computers came along - I'm sure I would have only a few of them completed due to the length of time spent correcting typing errors. Remember that on typewriters there is no such thing as "spellchecker." That's us, the typer.
Oh, BTW, I lost track of the number of spelling mistakes that I made and corrected just writing this little piece. Oh, we have come such a long way!

So true and the texting for me has become so much easier. When my broker asked if I text when he hired me, of course I said yes, Then the first time Igot a text from him, he must have thought I was in the shower for as long as it took me to hit that send button. We have came a long way.
Steve, you are so right. Having turned 50 this month I can actually remember life before my computer. My children have no idea what that was like. Growing up with the old manual typewriters, I can remember being ecstatic when me grandma bought me my first electric typewriter. I also remember when spell check was a really large dictionary on the side of the desk. Thanks for the memories Steve.
Steve, you speak for "thousands" of us - maybe more! :-) I swear, my fingers are getting dyslexia as I age - the letters just seem to get jumbled up as I type along. Ha!
Treva,
So true, and on those first messages we want them to be just right. :)
Steve
Suesan,
Yes, how many times did we hear "go look it up" when we wanted to know how to spell something? :)
Steve
Mike,
I often wonder who is doing the typing - me or my fingers? I type words with extra letters or in the wrong order. :)
Steve
I would have gotten much better grades in college writing classes with spell check. I used to go down a grade or more because of typos...a word my 13-year old doesn't even know. :)
I couldn't believe it when a good friend of mine told me that this weekend he has to go out and buy his daughter (a college student) a laptop computer because a class she wants to take during the summer semester requires one. If you don't walk in the class with a laptop on the first day of class the Professor drops you! In my day it was a pencil and a pad of paper!!!
Karen,
Fortunately for me, only my term papers had to be typed. Everything else we wrote longhand. :)
Steve
Dan,
Right you are - and don't forget the sliderule. :)
Steve
600 post on Active Rain - oh, my fingers hurt just thinking about them :>)
Steve,
You sure have that right. Despite all the bitching about computers when they do not work, it would be a real hassle without them.
Lee and Carol,
Thanks. It's great exercise for our fingers - our brains also. :)
Steve
Steve,
I remember typing a paper in college with cut and paste (the original use of the term) and taping papes together and then taping or stapling new edits onto new pages. Actually, I'd rather not think about it. :)
Steve
Steve - Congratulations on your 600th post! Keep up the good work... By the way, it's funny how kids nowadays don't know what a typewriter is... :)
Steve, First Congrats on 600 posts. Don't sell yourself short if you were limited to a type writer I'm sure you'd do just fine...
Steve,
600 post WOW... bravo for you !.... makes my fingers hurt... Have a great and successful week
Debi,
Thank you for being a steady reader and commenter. Yes, that's something about the typewriter and so many other tools that we used to use (sliderule, carbon paper, mimographs). :)
Steve
Paul,
Thank you. I appreciate the vote of confidence - I think you're probably right. :)
Steve
Lynn,
Thanks. Who knew I'd have so much to say? It's great fun. :)
Steve
IBM Selectric - now that was a machine... Our workhorse is over 20 years old now and still works with absolutely no servicing... I miss the days when we had no computers on the desk and dictated everything... liked the deliberative process...
Ryan,
It was nice to have someone else type your stuff, but I think I like the PCs. :)
