Just good enough to win

How many times do we go all out and then pull back a little when we know we've got the listing or the sale or the referral? How often do we give a good performance but not a great performance?

Last night at the Beijing Olympics, Jamaica's Usain Bolt lived up to his nickname of "Lightning Bolt" up until the end of the race when he flamed out. He still delivered a blazing performance that established a new world record at 9.69 seconds.

However, he quit before the end of the race - no he finished the race, but he quit trying to do his best. Once he saw he had comfortably won he let up. He even turned to the cameras.

Clearly he's the fasted man to ever run the race. His record proves that. But just how fast is he? I would have loved to see him set a truly spectacular time by going all out, all the way.

The next time we're faced with a situation where we're out in front - maybe ahead of our sales goals or in competing for and earning the business from someone - let's finish strong. Maybe we'll even surprise ourselves at just how good we can be.
