World War I was fought almost 100 years ago. The US became involved in 1917 and stayed until the War ended in 1918.
The last surviving US member of that War, Frank Buckles, has died. With him goes the last first-hand connection to the conflict. Family members of others that served carry on the memories and the stories, but the last participant from our country is now gone. There are just two survivors of the War in the world.
A decade ago, a small World War I contingent could be seen in parades, Veteran's Day, Memorial Day, and other observances in various parts of the country. To put history in perspective. right after World War I, the same could be said of Civil War veterans.
Today, his body will lie in repose in the Amphitheater at Arlington National Cemetery before burial there this afternoon.
Buckles was only 16 when he enlisted after finally convinving an Army captain that he was 18. He lived to 110.
In all, some 4.7 million Americans served in the War.
An era and our connection to it is over.
