Time For Another New Senator In Florida

We are eagerly awaiting Marco Rubio to be sworn in as the next Senator from Florida. He brings fresh ideas and energy to the office.

That said, Bill Nelson, long time liberal Senator from Florida, is no friend to the taxpayer. He is boasting that he just received an additional $342 million for a $2.6 billion high speed rail project that runs just 84 miles between Tampa and Orlando - roughly $31 million per mile (paralleling I-4). This is after the governors of Ohio and Wisconsin wisely and prudently rejected the goverment earmark carrot for high-speed rail in their states.

Florida is quite the political sweetheart right now. Obama "gave" the State $1.025 billion in Stimulus money, and 2 months ago, Florida received $800 million for the rail project. Florida needs to match the $800 million with $280 million that we don't have.

Florida voters rejected the idea of a high speed rail in 2004 (for all the good it did) after once approving it in 2000, but money seems to talk.

That's about all that talks. Try talking to Bill Nelson. I have lost count of the number of attempts to contact his office. Either the mailbox is full or his voice requests us to leave a message. That way he never has to talk to us or consider what we want.

It's business as usual for old Bill until he is unseated on November 6, 2012. Oh, what a day that will be.

OINK!

There is no stopping the out of control, spendthrift, devil-may-care (and probably does), reckleness of the US Senate - on the heels of similar action by the House.

A $1.1 trillion end-of-year Omnibus spending package was approved today to fund many of the government programs (not defense).

This measure was so important that the Senate had to hold a special Sunday session to pass it. Would we be any less broke by waiting another day or two?

All of this should be moot - should be.

Presdient Obama as Candidate Obama said that he would veto any spending bill that had pork or earmarks in it.

This one is loaded. Here's his chance to make good on one of his campaign promises.

All of the Republicans and 3 Democrats voted against passage. John McCain has demanded that Obama veto this. Odds are, he won't.
