The Texas Board of Education voted preliminarily to return to our founding traditions when wiriting future textbooks for the public schools.
The books - for history of the world and the United States, science, and government - which won't be available until the 2013 school year at the earliest, will focus more on what our Founding Fathers did and the early traditions of this country rather than revisionism.
History happened. We should study it as closely as the accounts of the times allow. It is not up to us to revise it as though it never happened or to couch in terms of our own ideology or agenda.
We have a rich tradition, and school children should learn about it. I even heard one Board member say that free enterprise was a topic that should be taught. Wow!
Why all the focus on Texas? Because of their process and the amount of books that they order, the school book publishers write their books to comply with the standards passed by the Texas Board of Education - and 47 States buy the books that are written for Texas. As Texas goes, so goes the country in terms of textbooks.
This was just the first vote. Another vote will be taken after a 30-day public review.
Texas has taken a bold first step. Hooray for Texas!
