When We Expect Too Much

When we expect too much from any performance, we often are disappointed. When a team absolutely has to win, sometimes they find ways to lose - silly mistakes, mental errors, lack of focus. When we absolutely have to make a sale - to make a quota, collect a bonus, keep our position, or get a necessary payday - we tend to overwork the presentation. It becomes our agenda rather than the customer's.

People are saying that in tomorrow night's speech before Congress, the President has to hit a home run - that this is the most important speech of his short Presidency. It may not be that great. See above. I'm sure the words will be fine. It just may not be as persuasive as it needs to be or as emotional or forceful as his supporters would want it to be for him make his case.

Personally, I hope it's a fine speech but that it has no impact whatsoever. Let the health care bill die. Start over with something else.

Nevertheless, when we press too hard - especially when we are more concerned about our own outcome, we often are disappointed.
