When Can You Lose Your Job And Still Keep It?

Sounds like a riddle doesn't it? Lose your job and still keep it. That's right - if you work for Toyota, North America.

Toyota has announced that it will close all 13 North American plants this month - temporarily - due to lack of parts from Japan. This will mean that 25,000 people will not show up for work, but none will be layed off. Don't know if or how they will be paid while on furlough, but they will have a job to return to. Nice work if you can get it. Wonder if it's to late to apply.

The indefinite closures will affect the Toyota and Lexus cars made in North America.

Ford, Chrysler, and Nissan have indicated they will face disruptions in production as well.

"Not So Fast" Department

Remember how we enjoyed watching Toyota fall from grace and suffer the arrows of public outcry at the number of accidents and incidents that led to massive recalls across several product lines?

Well. it seems that after independent testing and examination by agencies such as the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) that many, if not most, of the incidents were caused by driver error.

Toyota admitted during the outcry that they were aware of issues. This may not have been the best PR move - esoecially in light of new information.

Nevertheless, it seems that a company that suffered severly at the hands of public opinion - perhaps having some gasoline thrown on the fire by its competitor Government Motors - was not nearly the culprit that it was made out to be.
