Being Elected Does Not Mean Being Anointed

As I watch some of these Town Hall meetings, I am appalled at the behavior of the elected officials.

You can comment on the behavior of the citizens, but they get a pass in my book. They're the boss - even if they are minimalized and trivialized by the elite running the meeting.

Citizens are mad, they are seeing things slip away from them, they are being presented with one set of proposals after another to tax them more or restrict their freedoms. They don't speak in public everyday. Forgive an emotional outburst, a mis-speak, or a little shouting. They've had it.

On the other hand, the politicians speak in public or on the floor of Congress constantly. They should be on their very best behavior. Comparing someone to a dining room table and then telling her that you refuse to talk to her is unthinkable, Barney Frank.

Politicians have gotten it all wrong. The Town Halls are not for them to talk. It's for them to listen. They probably shouldn't even have microphones.

People are tired of seeing Congress act like they're doing us a favor by enduring all of the hardships of a 4-day work week, private health care, around the world junkets, and many of the other perks of office. People are tired of hearing that they are so busy that they can't possibly read the legislation they're voting on.

Next November I propose that as Americans we issue pink slips to all 435 House Members and the 34 Senators up for re-election. Then they'll have time to see it from our side of the equation.

Just Phone It In

Town Hall meetings have become quite visible over the past couple of weeks. In many ways, this is a throwback to the 18th Century when patriots rose up to question what was going on in their country and to have a voice in shaping its future.

Our government is clearly out of touch with the citizenry or they wouldn't be acting as an elite class.

That's what has precipitated the Town Hall meetings - although I'm not sure it's really having that much of an impact on the elected officials. It's more like something they feel they need to do just to say that they "listened" to the people. They showed up. Listened, not sure. In some cases, probably not.

It has shown that the American people are tired of being ignored and pushed around.

Have you heard the latest wrinkle on the Town Hall meetings? Just phone it in. That's right, some Congressmen including Ron Klein of South Florida - are going to be conducting their Town Hall meeting by conference call. Isn't that special? Nothing like going out of your way to meet with your constituents.
