The Tour of France ("Tour de France") bike race started today. This is a very arduous athletic contest that extends over 2,000 miles of physical activity for 3 weeks. Can't really have too many off days and still plan on doing well.
While this appears to be an individual event, and we certainly recognize the big names in the sport, it is very much a team sport and one of intense strategy.
This year, there are 4 American teams fielded although most teams have an international flavor rather than being purely one nationality. A total of 198 riders started today, but we'll have to wait until the 24th to see who the winner is.
I like watching and following the race anyway, but now that there's no NFL or NBA, it becomes a more important event.
