Can We Go Back To Being A Republic?

The United States is not a democracy, although many people think we are. We are a republic.

A true democracy has majority rule - 50.1% of the people vote for it, and it becomes law.

A republic is similar with an important distinction. Our representatives are elected to fairly implement the will of the people. They are free to vote as they want, but the concept is that they will vote to do the most good for the most people based on broad-based needs as expressed through public support and opinion.

We have moved from a republic to an oligarchy - rule by the few. In this case, it's not even the collective 535 members of Congress plus the President. It is even a smaller number of members of the House and Senate, along with the President.

This oligarchy has decided that the American people are too stupid to know what they want or need so the ruling class is now choosing what we need and getting the rest of Congress to vote to approve and implement it. What's more, they are blantant about it.

If we were a republic, and our elected representatives actually reflected the will or desire of the people, there would be no TARP, Stimulus, GM ownership, AIG or Citi bailout, cap and trade or health care. Sure, there are some who think that the decisions that have been made are necessary, but not the majority. And the deficits!!!

Can we go back to being a republic - and following the Constitution?
