Sometimes, the little details make a huge difference. Yesterday, in the Indy 500, a rookie (J.R. Hildebrand) was all set to win the the race. He could have taken his foot of the gas and coasted across the finish line - except for one minor detail. Maybe he was looking ahead to the finish line. Maybe he was anticipating Victory Lane. What he did not do was complete turn 4 properly. He went in high and crashed. His lead went away and he coasted across the the finish line in second place with a mutilated racecar.
In the Coca Cola 600, Jimmie Johnson - after leaving the pits in the closing laps went from 8th place to 27th place because his crew forgot to remove an adjusting wrench. Then after Jimmie climbed back up to 10th place he blew his engine with 5 laps to go. Maybe he wouldn't have driven his car so hard to get back into the top places without that blunder.
In that same race, Dale Earnhardt, Jr. (Jimmie's teammate) took the white flag and was headed for victory until he ran out of gas heading into turn 4 and finished 7th.
The Miami Heat won the last regular game of the season in a match that seemingly didn't matter because they already were in the playoffs. Many coaches would have rested the starters for the playoffs. Miami won that game to give them a good springboard into the playoffs, but now that they are in the Finals and playing for the Championship, they have home court advantage because of that one win. They have the better season record.
Sometimes the little things make a huge difference.
