Funny How That Works Out

Wisconsin today finally passed the restricted collective bargaining rules for public school teachers. This was done by the State Senate even with the 14 Senators still AWOL. Turns out, they removed the portion of the budget bill dealing with this from the overall package and passed it without the 20 member requirement needed for the budget bill. They should have done this the first day the 14 Senators went into hiding.

So, the President, the Secretary of Education, the head of the AFL-CIO, and Michael Moore could not prevail in an arena in which they had no standing and no skin in the game. It's as it should be.

Now, the missing Senators have announced that they will return to work tomorrow. Since what they opposed got passed anyway, there's no point in them staying away.

Gov. Scott Walker misplayed this one. He started out with the right posture, but he didn't suggest today's action - which would have been the right call on the first day. Instead he was having negotiations with the missing Senators and making concessions. How do you have conversations with the Senators who don't exist because they are off the job and in self-imposed exile? Fortunately the Senate voted for the financial interests of the State by eliminating all bargaining issues except salaries.

Now that this is done, other states can follow.
