Rick Scott of Florida signed his first bill today as Governor - SB 736. This bill eliminates tenue for all new teachers - it no longer will exist. It also creates merit pay and evaluations for retention. Cureent teachers can elect to go intot he new system also with the opportunity for larger pay increases than they have now as long as they meet the remuneration criteria.
This bill is similar to SB 6 which Charlie Crist vetoed last year. Apparently there is widespread support by teachers for this new bill. Of course, the unions are opposed to it.
Florida is attempting to show the way in education. There are other measures being considered as well by the Legislature.
