Although there may be an official annual Tea Party convention, there really are no card-carrying members as we normally think of belonging to something.
There are no Tea Party candidates at any level. There are no Tea Party fund-raisers. There is not a Tea Party headquarters or CEO. There's no place to send a donation - other than various groups who align with the basic precepts being advanced.
So what is the Tea Party and what's the big deal?
The Tea Party, or tea party, is an attitude and outlook. It takes its name from the Boston Tea Party in 1773 when colonists dressed as Indians threw tea into Boston Harbor to protest taxation. The taxation protest - and the excessive spending - is the crux of the current movement.
Anyone who is tired of excessive taxation (not necessarily the rate but the fact that the government has more than enough revenue for what they need to spend) and the endless array of regulation that stiffles enterprise, job creation, and competition is supporting the tea party position - whether they acknowledge it or not.
A return to Constitutional principles, a support of individual rights and liberties, spending only what is necessary to provide services and programs already on the books (even though many of them are outside constitutional authority), and a constant reduction in the size, scope, and perview of the federal government are key concepts of Tea Partiers.
It crosses formal party lines and involves many "ordinary" people in the political process and discourse who never saw themselves as being so inclined.
