March Madness Is Over

College basketball's March Madness is over. The final game of the season is Monday night.

March Madness is an apt title for a very transitional month. Many things change in March.

We began March in winter although many areas of the country experienced above average temperatures, low snowfall, and a very mild winter. March is traditionally very winding as it changes the seasons.

We leave March on the threshold of spring. Spring officially arrived 10 days ago and daylight savings time a little before that.

Baseball has begun. Now, our attitudes are focused on springtime activities. There is a freshness to our activities.

As April arrives, we are entering the heart of spring. Brilliant colors, new sounds, and fresh smells abound. It makes us feel good, and we are inspired to be productive. Schools are still in session, spring breaks are over, and summer vacations are a couple of months away. This is a great time to be in business.

It Really Was Cold This Winter

Forget all that nonsense about Global Warming. Much of the country experienced a cooler winter (or colder) than normal.

In South Florida, we had several near-frost nights, and a little farther north in the state, there were hard freezes and snow.

It wasn't just our imagination.

Of the 88 days from December 21-March 19 that official comprised Winter, 2009-2010, 62 of them (70%) had lower than normal high temperatures, and 65 (74%) had lower than normal overnight low temperatures. We set a few records along the way as well.

I know some areas of the country are getting snow today.

Nevertheless, spring officially is here, and it will feel and look like it everywhere before long. Hooray for spring!

A Rite Of Springtime

I remember growing up in the north how baseball spring training always meant that winter was coming to an end. Living here in Florida where spring training (part of it anyway) is actually played, it has a little less significance. Nevertheless, it is still a rite of springtime.

I like spring training for a few reasons. The players are closer to the fans - no pressure to perform for the press. All teams have the same unblemished record for now. The excitement and anticipation is in the air.

So pick your World Series winner and wait until the fall to see how close you came - you may know much sooner than that if the team you pick underperforms.

For the moment, all teams are equal with no losses (no wins either). It is a rite of spring. Enjoy it.
