One year ago today, September 24, 2010, undefeated Lake Stevens High School in Washington state was about to score a shutout on Snohomish High School, also in Washington, leading 35-0 with time expiring.
Ike Ditzenberger, a 17-year-old junior at Snohomish, was a member of the team, but his Down Syndrome kept him from full participation like the other members of his team.
Coach Mark Perry created a play that ended every varsity practice which he called the "Ike Special." Ike got the ball on a handoff and ran toward the "defense" who were very kind to him.
With just 10 seconds left in the game, and the crowd chanting "We want Ike!" Coach Perry put Ike into the game to run his play. Wearing No. 57, Ike took the handoff and ran for the endzone. He was not touched as he received assistance from both teams.
Ike ended up running for 51 yards and scored his team's only touchdown. The game was never in doubt, but the Lake Stevens team gave up its shutout for Ike.
