From one extreme to the other

Florida (especially South Florida) has its seasons just like any any area, but our two main seasons are the rainy season and the rest of the year.

We just came off a very dry season. There were some wildfires and brushfires - but not as many as you might expect for the conditions we had. Maybe people were being more careful, and there certainly was no lightening to start anything.

Our drought index which ranges to a high of 800 was close to being reached in many places. The index measures the amount of moisture in the soil, and for every inch that you can dig without any moisture present is "100." I don't know why it only goes to 800 - seems it could go much higher than that.

Anyway, we had that condition until midweek. Now we have had rain - lots of it. Daytona, Orlando, and other areas in the middle and northern parts of the state had over 2 feet of rain by last night, and we have had over a foot since yesterday morning.

This definitely cured the drought and all of the plants that had withered. Now, if the plants don't rot from the standing water.

What a way to kick off the wet season!

It's days like these that I'm thankful to live in Florida

Everyone should enjoy where they live and take pride in it. If not, there are so many other wonderful places in this great country where you can live.

I am amazed at all of the local beauty found in the various places I've visited across this country - and other places that I've only seen through pictures.

Today, we are enjoying another crystal clear, Chamber of Commerce day. Highs will be in the low 70s.

As this is Thanksgiving, I am thankful to be living in South Florida when I can walk out my back door and see my tangerines ripening - almost ready to eat.

And where else can you see leaves changing this late into the year - among the palm trees?

It’s fall in South Florida - the leaves are turning and so are the citrus

In South Florida, we have our own version of Fall. It began mid-late October.

As you can see from the photos, we have some leaves changing colors - nothing dramatic like some of the photos displayed from northern fall foliage - but color change nonetheless.

This just happens to coincide with another type of color change - the citrus is changing from green and lighter yellow to deep yellow and orange.

Oh, BTW it was in the high 70's today.

Happy Thanksgiving. We certainly are thankful for what we enjoy here.

Beautiful South Florida day - and in July

I guess we all owe Al Gore a big thank-you for the great weather we've had this summer. It it weren't for global warming, we might not have the pleasant weather that we're enjoying and a cooler than normal summer. Except for a few bouts of high humidity and a couple of upper-ninety degree days, this has been a very mild summer - temperature-wise - here in South Florida.

The last couple of days were so pleasant with a delightful cool breeze that it made me want to open the windows - and it definitely does not seem like July.

Wish You Were Here

At the risk of sounding like a vacation postcard message, all I can say is "Greetings from South Florida - wish you were here." This has been a beautiful early spring day (yes, spring comes early but it can be short-lived also) with temperatures in the upper 70s and a cool breeze. Perfect for yard work - which I love to do but I think I did too much. Tree trimming, transplanting of bushes, weeding, raking.

I know that there are many people fighting the cold and snow today that would love to try our weather, but your time will come.

I offer this as thanksgiving report for such a glorious day rather meaning to boast about our weather or make anyone not enjoying such a fine day feel bad. Weather is weather - everyone has it. Some days are better than others. Today was perfect.
