The disappearing sounds of summer

As summer morphs into fall, the all-day sounds of children playing on their carefree summer vacation have been replaced by after school and weekend play. The baseball games have mostly concluded, and Friday night and weekend football games have replaced them. The public swimming areas are closed or mostly deserted.

No time for melancholy here. Fall is a great time of year.

I just heard the mechanical strains of "Turkey in the Straw" in the distance and knew instantly it was an ice cream truck. Some play "The Entertainer" or other tunes, but there's no mistaking the sound of an ice cream truck - even blocks away.

That's what made me think that we are transitioning from the sounds of summer.
