Remember the rental car battles between Hertz and Avis, with the "we try harder" campaign? A similar battle has been raging for years in the soft drink industry.
For decades. Pepsi and Coke have been battling for the number one spot - both in sales and in perception. Some convention hotels, arenas, and airports only serve Coke, some only Pepsi, some are mixed. Battle lines are evident in many places, and the brand loyalty is strong. For some, a cola is a cola. For others, they will go without rather than drink the opposite brand.
Now, here's a twist in this beverage war. All this time, the contenders were Coke and Pepsi. Until now when Diet Coke splipped into second place. It's now Coke, Diet Coke, and Pepsi, in that order.
Soft drink sales have been declining, but this is the top 3 for now. Rounding out the top 10 are 6 other Pepsi brands (#4-9) and one Coke (Fanta at #10).
Again, competition makes the market lively.
