For those of you who follow college football, the last few days have been part of "Rivalry Week" where the fiercest rivalries between teams are renewed - Florida-Florida State, Texas-Texas A&M, Alabama-Auburn, Oklahoma-Oklahoma State - just to mention a few.
This post is not about football - only inspired by it.
In real estate, who is our rival? Oh, it might be another agent who we compete against for listings or sales. However, I think our biggest rival is ourselves.
In athletics, people have an "IR" which stands for "individual record." It's the same as "personal best." It has nothing to do with how well someone else competes in an event unless your IR also is the current record for your sport. Primarily it's a personal thing - hence the name.
When you're just starting out jogging, your IR might be one block - forget about the time. Then as you progress, you get up to a mile. Then your personal best concerns how fast you run the mile - both in practice and at a meet (if you choose to compete).
In real estate sales, lets look at some IRs. For instance, what's the most sales you've ever made in a week? That's your IR. Now compete against yourself to break that record.
The number of listings in a month? Closings in a month? Sales on your own listings? Whatever you choose to measure, begin competing against yourself. Beat your own IR, then set out to beat it again.
