School Is Back In Session

Schools opened for the fall term today in Palm Beach, Broward, and St. Lucie counties in South Florida. Miami-Dade starts tomorrow, and Martin started last Monday. Now the school calendar takes precedence in scheduling events.

Traffic is going to be much, much heavier in the morning from before daybreak to 9:00 as families drive their kids to school and school buses scheduled to take the remaining kids. Then repeat this in the afternoon from 1:30-4:30.

There won't be as many vehicles on the road during the day as there has been during the summer for doctors' appointments, shopping ballgames, lessons, and the like, but they will be at the end of the school day instead.

Any way you look at it, it's more traffic and more congestion. Don't forget those reduced speed zones in front of the schools - guaranteed to add several minutes to your trip but very expensive and potentially dangerous to the kids if you don't observe them. Fines range as high as $600.

A bit or normalcy and routine has returned as we begin yet another school year and bid goodbye to summer vacation.
