With school getting ready to start up again in our area, I think back to my childhood days and remember being envious of the others who got to ride the school bus – it seemed like such an adventure. I think in 4th grade I finally to ride in one on a field trip.
In our school district you had to live more than a mile-and-a-half from the school to qualify for bus service. We lived literally on the other side of the street that was the boundary. So we never got to use the bus.
I still remember getting up before dawn every morning to get our kids off to the bus stop when they were in school, but now it seems hardly anyone uses the bus – even though they’re available.
It might be discipline or safety issues on the bus, or it might be the long circuitous route that some of the buses take.
Most, if not all, of the elementary schools in our area start at 8 and let out at 2. All I know is that I need to avoid the school zones whenever possible during these hours. Sometimes I’m not paying attention to the time or driving by the schools in unavoidable, and I see a mile of traffic queued up – starting as much as 45 minutes before the school dismissal. It seems that no one can settle for just riding the bus anymore.
What happened to walking to school, or biking? I still some parents walking their kids to school.
If Detroit is waiting for our area to order more school buses, they should make other plans.
