Another Loss For The Free Market

The San Francisco Board of Supervisiors has voted to move forward with their attempt to prohibit McDonald's from dispensing toys in their Happy Meals unless there also are fruit and vegetables in the packages, too. Obviously, the Board knows somwething about retail marketing that we don't.

Actually, they have determined, though there is no empirical evidence to support it - only speculation - that fast food meals contribute to unhealthiness. They feel that this is the answer.

This is a discretionary purchase by adults. McDonald's isn't the only purveyor of hamburgers, chicken pieces, and french fries. Nevertheless, the kids aren't buying their own Happy Meals - although they may exert a lot of influence on their parents or older siblings to buy them.

Want to bet that if the ban takes effect that there are going to be a lot of fruits and vegetables packaged in the Meals that will be discarded?

If the American public wants a Happy Meal, they should be free to buy it. If McDonald's want to sell them and there is nothing dangerous (there really isn't), obscene, profane, or nefarious in the product, then let them. This is free market economics - meeting a need at a fair price.

If this is enacted, who is the next target?
